Newtown Shooting

I just wanted to ask field owners, how to overcome the different reactions of parents of (actual and potential players) when tragic events occur. Do you think people relates paintball with violent behavior, or any other issue that could have an effect on the psyche of youths?
I have not open my field yet, but I have couple of scenario games that you can perceive as violent.

In March of last year, we had a school shooting in the town where my field is located. Thankfully it was only one student who was shot and he survived. We also had an incident a neighboring county. A man shot and killed a boy who was playing paintball on his property. He'd given the kid's family permission to play on the land, but didn't realize they were out there. He thought it was a coyote.

In both cases I didn't see any negative impact to my business. In fact there was little to no conversation about it.

I think in this situation we won't see much of an impact. The weeks leading up to Christmas are typically a slow time, at least for fields in cold weather areas. Most people are thinking about the holiday and spending their money accordingly.

It also looks like the cause for the shooting is going to fall on mental instability, rather than the shooter acting out some twisted fantasy.

My field is roughly an hour from the incident and I haven't noticed a difference really. It's usually slow before Christmas as well like Target said. Peoples minds are elsewhere @ the moment.

I'm in the next town over and share a border with Newtown. I'll let you know in the spring how it turns out. It whole help that most of the area fields close down for the winter so we're out of sight out of mind.

It's not 1999 anymore. Virtually everyone knows what paintball is, they know it isn't violent (in the same way football and wrestling aren't violent) and they won't make the connection. Plus, this isn't a case where the public has to "grasp" for an explanation... there's pretty clearly a mentally unstable individual living in a house with an extensive firearms collection whose mother apparently took him to firing ranges to learn to shoot.

I'd be worried if I were a gun range, but I'm not seeing any paintball connection here.

You say that, yet at the Colorado theater shooting certain people were linking paintball to the killings. "Virtually everyone" would be more like half the population in my opinion

I think something like this is more likely to affect people's perception of paintball: http://now.msn.com/teen-shoots-and-k...tball-argument

If it read "Teen shoots and kills friend after basketball argument" would we blame basketball?

In that case the guy had a paintball poster on his wall, which happened to be the only thing the media got a picture of before the feds closed the curtains.

This was posted on the National Paintball League's Facebook page:

The National Paintball League expresses our deepest condolences to the affected families in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. We regret any incident that results in injury or loss of life. Even-though this tragedy reportedly did not take place during a paintball sporting event, we ask that all players act diligently to prevent future incidents from occurring. Players should enjoy a good spirited yet highly competitive experience and should seek professional assistance to resolve any adverse situations; bottom line – leave it on the field.

CORRECTION: PAINTBALL ARGUMENT-SHOOTING STORY. Police say the argument was between the accused shooter and a third teenager in the house who witnessed the shooting.
