Provide them with the model. You should provide a drawing also to call out critical areas or tolerances, but always provide a model if you can. I've seen many screw ups when people are trying to model up a part from a drawing only.

also entirely dependent on part complexity

but manike is right, as a general rule you want to supply more than enough information at all times, 2D drawings just dont cut it sometimes

Thanks, I do enjoy my job alot.

Frmer- Model the part to the nominal. I would get models that are either at the high or low leaving me no tolerance left when I machine the part.

Well part of the problem is I'm drawing it by the seat of my pants, so to speak. Some of the measurements I am able to pull from an existing bolt, but others I am making up. I have solidworks but don't have a system able to effectively use it.

What do mean you don't have system to use it effectively? Computer? Measuring? Experience?

Computer and probably experience. I know the concepts that I'm implementing and the math.

I've designed bolt systems in the past. Some worked, some didn't. Just a fun learning experience for me.

Started using solidworks sometime in september this year, this was my final project for my CAD class, let me know what you guys think!
It took me a lot longer than expected, so I had to rush it at the end and skipped out on a couple things (eye covers, some of the ridiculous RL milling, etc...) I did the entire thing using solid bodies, and just from reading some of the posts here, surfaces are the way to do it. (done in solidworks)

Inventor 2013 is cool
It's becoming a bit complex but definitely more powerful than the older versions

I hate it. I load a big assembly and the damn program crashes. Actually, it's toss up between Inventor or Vault on which one crashes

Personally I like more stream lined approaches.

Thank you sir, means a lot coming from you, I really dig your ****.

Does anyone know how I can make the final render have a lot more contrast? There's a lot going on that just isn't shown, all the small details just vanish

I render a couple of versions of same image lighter darker etc then photoshop layers and brush through the detail

It must be just the server installs that are buggy with it. I have the standalone version on my laptop and it runs really well. Are you switching to NX because that is what most of the defense industry uses or because you are so upset with Inventor?

Here is a fishing reel I did in inventor. I had help rendering it as I am not the best getting things to look the great using Showcase.

It's more architecture than CAD (could you classify this as CAD?), but I'm building a 2000-3000 sq. ft. house at the moment. Looking to be a ranch, beach house idea. Single level, with a basement. 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, garage and some other stuff

Ground surrounding it will be added sometime when I'm near completed wit the interior/exterior.

(Autodesk Revit)

Really wish I could make the driveway out of something like cobblestone. Can't find it anywhere

I also don't want to make it myself. :S

Working on tree positions at the moment. It's proving difficult to look good and function correctly..

Nice work!

I participated in a "Autodesk Student Expert" program while in college and met some people who were really talented at revit. The stuff you can create with the program is pretty incredible.

Thanks! If anyone in here has it, I'll take some cobblestone that can be loaded in

That driveway looks WAY to bright right now. It needs to be toned down, I just can't find any good driveway materials that compliment the house as well as doing its real life job.

One of the problems I have right now are the trees I'm placing. The ones by the front door go into the house and it looks TERRIBLE. I tried trimming them with the cut tool but couldn't get it to work.

If anyone has a kind of grassy-sandy material made and you can give it to me to import, I'll gladly make the area around the house that item.

Sand doesn't look good, and grass just doesn't seem to work with it.
