I'm sure it varies state by state, but here in CA I had to also take the hunters safety course

hunters safety covers many aspects of the hunt, not just the firearm. Most of the time we spent learning the in's and out's of how to keep yourself within state and ethical guidelines while hunting. It's a great course, and you should take it before hunting anyhow.
