New player, gun thoughts

Hey guys,

This is my first post. The wife and I have recently decided to get into paintball.

I bought her a Spyder MR4 gun package for xmas, which is currently unopened.

I am interested in a Spyder MRX or a Spyder E-MR5 for myself.

However, I don't know anything about paintball guns. Are these guns any good? Other guns that I were looking at were from Tippman, but I really like the assault rifle look of the spyders. We will be playing at a course near us about once or twice a month. It has a couple woods levels as well as a small speedball level.

Another reason I was looking at these guns is because I can get the whole package (mask, tank, extras) for less than $200-$300

There are all sorts of questions to ask yourself before deciding on which gun to buy
Where are you intending to play? Woods, airball. the assault rifle looking ones arent very good as you get into playing airball, if thats what you want to play.
What is your budget? For someone that is just going to go out and shoot some paintballs at eachother in the woods every so often a spyder will do that. Depending on how into it you get it may not suit your needs. You could look into an etha, empire axe, or an invert mini on here or new fairly cheap.

Honestly it depends again on what you want to play and how much you want to spend. If you are going to play traditional recreation paintball then something like a smart parts ion would be a decent choice - I recommend that. If you want a good place for paintball gear - check out ansgear.com

a good setup i recommend for less than 300$

smart parts ion - you can usually buy for 150ish range
ansgear tank - take your pic - 60ish range
kingman fasta 9v hopper - 50ish range
goggles or really cheap mask
pods n pack another 15-20$ if you want to buy those too

totals around 300

hey guys, thanks for the replies.

As far as the games I will be playing, its gonna be whatever is there and people are willing to play. I will definitely not be doing any tournaments, just some scrimmages at my local course.

So far it looks like I will either get the spyder mrx or mr5, depending on when I decide to get my own gun. Basically, I'm just looking to get my own equipment so when I play its cheaper than renting crappy guns. My price range is gonna be less than $300 at the moment (which is for the whole package) until I find a reason to upgrade to better guns.

I wanna hold out for the spyder Emr5 so that I can use full auto, burst, or semi auto. Also, I wanna see how my wife's mr4 turns out before I decide on a gun for myself.

Some of the tippman us army guns look cool too but are kinda pricey.

If you like the "look" the US Army Alpha black just price dropped to 109.
But honestly, most people once they lug around the assault rifle type markers a while wish they had gotten a lighter gun.

Also, those packages are terrible, the masks they give you will fog up within minutes.

You are better off piecing your own packages.

Here are some cheap but very cost effective items.

$30 Invert Helix Goggles with the Thermal Lens
$60 JT Proflex goggles

$90 Azodin Kaos marker (mechanical, cocker threaded, twistlock feedneck, dual ball detents)
$170 Azodin Blitz marker (electric, cocker threaded, twistlock feedneck, dual ball detents, eyes, regulator, tournament firing modes)

$15 Proto primo hopper (gravity hopper that still lets you fire 5-10 bps with minimal jams) (goes well with STBB guns with a little kick like the kaos)
$75 Invert Halo Too loader (electric loader that feeds 20+ bps)

Honestly, based on what you've posted, I'd recommend a Tippmann or Bt marker. Most reliable guns for woodsball. You can throw them in the mud, puddle, beat it to hell, etc., and they will still work. But first, you need a good mask-one that has thermal lens, so you won't fog. Lot of good ones out there (jt proflex, empire events or eflex, dye i4s, etc). Go to your local shop and try some on. Definitely need to run a compressed air tank, not CO2. CO2 is bad for your gun, and the environment. An electronic hopper, mid-range ones like the halo too or even the primo hopper too.

this statement is Wholly incorrect. DO NOT skimp on a mask. Your mask is the ONLY thing protecting your vision, AND your hearing.

Start with a Tippmann, you can pick up an A-5 used with everything you need for $200-$250 used. It's a good start, shoots fast (although most fields around me dont let beginner walk-ons shoot in auto or burst anyway) and no batteries to mess with. We have 2 A-5s a mini and just got a proton but the wife won't give up her A-5. Cheap, durable and fun to shoot.

Gog enmey great starter gun only $129. In my opinion its the best bang for your buck and it has a lifetime warranty. It will be a lot more gentle on paint, way quieter, and have a lighter more comfortable trigger pull. They can run on CO2 or HPA as well.

Referring to goggles or really cheap mask...... WORST ADVICE EVER.

Also, those "crappy" rentals are probably better than your spyders. No joke.

Please Please Please Please Please don't get a Spyder. My teammate has owned 3 different Spyders, they are NOTHING BUT TROUBLE. Every time we play something goes wrong. His feedneck has completely just fallen apart. My beginner gun was a Tippmann A5 with a Response Trigger. I found it was a good starter gun. I got it for $200 BRAND NEW. You can probably buy a new A5 for $170-$180, but thats without the Response Trigger. Get a Compressed Air, HPA, tank right away. The MOST important piece of equipment you can own in paintball is your mask. I recently bought the Dye i4 mask and I love it! I know that it is out of your price range, but at least look for a mask that has a Thermal Lens on it. You don't need special pants or jerseys or any of that stuff if your just starting off and playing for fun. Pod packs are a necessity. You could probably pick up a used one for super cheap.

So $180 Tippmann A5 + $40 Empire Aluminum 47/3000psi HPA Tank + $60 Jt ProFlex Thermal Paintball Mask = $280 for Starter Kit

Remember HPA comes in 2 varieties . CF or carbon fiber $$$$ but usually has higher allowable pressure 4500# OR steel which is about 1/3 the cost new of CF but only holds 3000# . The moral of this story don't do CO2.
