Used 2.5 Timmy or Used Axe

Greetings all,

Been doing some research and what not to get back into the sport. I was originally set on a new market, but have been convinced to go the used route. I've found these 2 markers

2.5 Timmy for $250
2011 Axe for $270

Any thoughts on which is the preferred paint slinger. Will be mostly used for rec' ball.

Also, your thoughts on air efficiency and maitenance.

I went w/ the 2.5 Bob Long Timmy. Hope it was a good choice.

What made you decide? I would've picked the Axe.

I've never fired either. I haven't shot a paintball gun in quite a while, probably 2006 or so. I had picked up an ION as a cheap way to get back into the sport back then. During the 90's, I played rec' and low level tourney. I used primarily Mag's, then Cockers, then switched to a Gen 1 Shocker (ehh, didn't like it) and a Bushmaster (which wasn't bad).

Both the 2.5 Timmy and Axe seem like good markers. However, from the research I did on this site in the last few days, it seems that the Timmy was a top tier marker, while the Axe is viewed as mid-level by today's standards. Granted the Axe is much newer, but from what I've gathered on a performance level, they are not that far apart, with an edge in efficiency going towards the Timmy. So, on a performance basis, these seem like a wash to me.

However....

Call me crazy, but I don't like that the air is routed through the grip of the Axe. I like having a drop forward for the air, and maybe I'm very wrong here, but I haven't seen an option for the Axe to have a drop forward. Again, I'm basing all my info from what I have gleaned here at this site and from pictures. I have absolutely ZERO experience with either. Having said that, the Timmy seems better balanced. Yes, I'm sure it's heavier, but I don't mind that. I have to believe the additional weight keeps the gun balanced well when shooting high volumes of paint through helping negate muzzle lift/recoil effects of the bolt rocketing back and forth. Again, pure speculation, but when I played w/ a Cocker, having a non-milled body helped negate the reciprocating mass of the back block/bolt setup. Also, I've never heard of Bob Long guns being duds. Even back in the day when he was rockin a Cocker, his guns were very good. Lastly, while it has zero effect on perfomance and of course it's purely subjective, I can't say I'm a fan of the way the Axe looks. I'm sure I'm wrong, but it "looks" fragile.

I'm looking forward to getting the Timmy, testing it out a bit and playing again. I'm also looking forward to see if I can shoot someone's Axe a bit to see how it compares. If I like it that much, I can always sell the Timmy, probably for what I paid.

Timmy's are great guns! My buddy still uses my old 2k2 and it stays rocking.

BUT the axe is money. Like on another level money

Could you expand on your thoughts? Like I said, I've never fired either. What specifically do you like about the Axe over the Timmy?

While that is an endorsement, I'd bet money that the top guys can probably use quite a wide variety of markers and still win. One thing I learned way back when, was that the performance of the marker went so far. The player's skills made more of a difference. It's the Indian, not the arrow. And , while having pro teams use a given gun is great, I'm not going to be playing any tournaments any time soon.

Again, what specifically about the Axe is better? The only thing I've been able to find is that they are lighter.

What else?

Also, I was just going through the Axe pix thread and saw 1 Axe w/a drop forward. Are there drop forwards available for the Axe?

2003-2005 Timmys were the best!!!
Id take an alias or the 2.5 Intimidator over the Axe. I love those guns!
They are hot as hell and they rip. You made a good choice

Thanks! Yeah, it seems like a good gun at a good price. I'm sure there are lots of very competent markers available at a wide level of pricing. This works for me. Of course I sort of feel like an *** saying that and not even having had my hands on it yet. I'm sure for me, it will be considerably higher performance than the guns I've used in the past.

Do you know anything about the 2.5 Intimidator? Maintenance, quirks, etc.? I'm making a promise to myself to not fall down the rabbit hole of always trying to find something better. Back in the 90's, I had 7 or so top level guns. I was hiding them in the trunk of my car from my wife. The money spent

Thanks for the link!!! Gives me the warm and fuzzies for the purchase.

Any opinions on the Lurker Eigenbarrel vs. the Lapco Fuse kit?

I dont know much about barrels but i would take a kit over a single barrel every time. As long as the bores arnt useless sizes.

Would have gone with the Axe because A) It's new and right out of the box and B) I think it's better, however that is my opinion. Good luck

Not to be a dick, but why would you buy a marker you've never fired?

I agree, but in this case, the gun is already coming w/ a .692 barrel. I understand the Eigenbarrels are .678 & .684. For my needs, this would cover me well. I really like the idea of the Lapco barrel set though. They have longest and IMHO, the most ideal length back end I've seen of the inserts / 2 piece barrel type setups. As mentioned, I've had Lapco barrels in the past. I thought they were the best going, except they were loud. From what I've read, this setup is pretty quiet. But, the smallest back end they have is .680. And cost is a little cheaper on the 2 Lurker barrels as well.

Fair question...

As to this specific marker, I'm taking a chance on buying a used gun, no question. But, I think a lot of people on this forum, and others, buy used guns all the time.

As fas as never having fired the Axe or Timmy before, I had done some research and the attributes of the Timmy spoke to me more. I was looking for something sub $300 that would be competitive for rec' ball +. I was originally going new only, but read many "coming back to p'ball threads" and realized going used would get me more gun for my money. I scrolled through the BST on this board and some others. These were the best 2 options that interested me.

Lastly, I just received the Timmy in the mail today. I want to give it a good cleaning and what not, but I like it. Fits my hands well and balances nicely.

Now, I just need a hopper, air, mask, ammo pack, some paint and maybe a barrel or 2. Looking forward to playing.

Welcome to the land of timmies! I've been playing for close to ten years now and I always seem to come back to bob long guns. I think I've had something near 7 different timmies over time so I think you made a solid choice. What model did you get, what board is in it? If you have any set up questions feel free to pm me, I'd love to help another timmy get up and going
