Need help picking between two headphones.

I know this is technically a vs thread but I wanted more opinions in terms of pros and cons of two headphones not necessarily which is better then then other.

My birthday is coming up and the girlfriend is going to buy me some headphones. I keep debating between Audio Technica m50s or V-moda m80s. I can't decide between the two because both have amazing reviews.

However, I was curious if anyone had any experience with these headphones and could share.

I mainly listen to electro, rap, and soft rock.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

The m50s are really marketed for studio use from what their specs read.. That said, if you're looking for actual studio headphones, check out a pair of Beyer 770's and look no further.

My guess is you won't like studio headphones based on the music you listen to. They're meant to be as neutrally flat calibrated as possible (similar to a pair of studio monitors.)

I have no idea about those V-Modas... They don't even advertise their technical specs that well -- I had to dig just to find their sensitivity/response values.

The good thing about rap/techo/electronic/etc is that those genres typically require inexpensive (uncomplicated engineering) to properly hear what they want you to. These would technically rock your needs. I bought a few of these just for general use and to travel with just so that I wouldn't care if a $20 pair broke.

soft rock, though, has lots of little details that le cheapo basscans won't do well with.

I second GMaster with the Beyerdynamic 770's.

Secondly, I'd take some Sennheiser 550's over your other options.

Got the m80s and I love them so far. Comfy, portable, and I love the way they sound.

I'll agree with you on the rap but the electro/techno depends completely on the artist. Some get very technical, and very detailed with their productions to where with a ****tier set a headphones you wouldn't be able to distinguish all that they have put into the track.

to be helpful, ive use a pair of v-moda's before and they were pretty meh for the price. I always recommend Sennheiser, especially since amazon sells them refurbed for super cheap.

between those two I would not look past the Audio Technica .

however, Depending on your price range, you might do better.

I like the Sennheiser HD558's in the 200 and under price range. But the Audio Technica's are 124 on amazon right now (but have a 199 msrp),

so, in conclusion, for 124 the Audio Technica seem to be a winner. The extra 70 dollars for the senneheiser still would be money well spent.

Its okay. Everyone thanks for the suggestions but I really am happy with the M80s. They are getting better by the day. The sound is great, the build quality is solid, they are portable enough to not look crazy when I walk my dog, the chord is removable which I know will save me A LOT of hardship down the line.

Don't get me wrong, I wanted the Audio Technica for the longest time especially at a <$130 price point. My previous pair of headphones where sennheisers were okay but left me wanting a lot more. For that reason and the ones I mentioned above, I went with the V-modas. I was going to wait for the 100s but decided that $300 was well above my price range.

Sad thing is I work in a place where our best headphones are beats. Hard time trying to convince people to get the beats while I have the 80s on my desk.

M-100s

I have M-80s as well and they sound really nice but if I'm wearing glasses, they hurt my ears. The case they comes in is pretty sick too. If the M-100s were in my price range I'd totally go for the over ear cans now that they're available.

Why do you care about headphones having a flat sound ? Almost every good player can change the settings to alter the music for a hip-hop listeners needs compared to a progressive house music listeners needs .

Also take into account how warm your ears will be with each set . This is one thing that pisses me off and online reviews don't account for (go into a store and wear them and see )
