Getting into airball

So ive been playing paintball for around three years now and Im really starting to want to get into the airball scene, the only reason I havent played a round of airball before is that the fields in my area never had airball open when I went. Really I just want to know whats the best way to go at it. Me and my friend are really just wondering when to go and how to pair up with teams and what not and basic strategy or something along those lines, thanks.

go on an open play night. the field refs should divide players into teams, and start it up.

This is the best way to do it, the people that usually play public airball are awesome guys. I had never played airball much at all until a few weeks ago when some of the other guys at the field invited me to play, and one guy even lent me his podpack (I had been planning on only playing woodsball so I only brought a vest). I had no idea what I was doing but I fell in love with it.

yea your best bet is to just go and play with some people. generally try to watch some people play and you will get an idea. Some other thing is that you should play you bunkers tight dont stay back from them because you will be visible easily. It is a very fast paced game just keep that in mind once the paint starts flying

So would going to an open 3 man tournament be any good? It would be me, that other kid, and we would still have to find someone else. Semi auto only.

I would advise against this. if you have no speedball experience, youll probably get throttled and turn yourself off to the style.

That being said, everyone starts somewhere, and if you have time before the tournament, then sure, join it, but be sure to get out and experience the speed of the game before you jump into competitive play. It would be kind of like going from high school football straight to the NFL.

You will easily get owned in this type of play. You need to learn the fundamentals and get used to speedball before you decide to play in any 3-5 man tournaments/games. As the other before me have said. Go on an open night.

Yea, the only reason I suggested the tournament is because they were only charging 5 bucks more than normal entry fee. Just a thought, haha.

You'll most likely get owned a lot your first time even on an open night, much less a tournament. Go a few times before you even consider a tournament.

Just dont be afraid to get hit. I think I played 5 or so matches before I lasted more than 5 minutes. I was taken out very soon until I got the hang of it.

maybe if you could attend the tournament not to play and see how it runs and how the teams operate to get a better idea how to function with a team and give you an idea of what you are getting into

Learn the names of the bunkers and how to communicate with your team on the field.

Ideally you want to control the tapes, and get up the field as quick as possible. Controlling those key 50 yard line bunkers will really help you out with getting those late game G's while people are hunkered down. Things like laning, knowing exactly when to bump(move up), and and how to effectively communicate with your team members all take time and practice. Remember communication is the key. You always want to be talking and telling them what you need/is going on. One guy screaming "D3 D3 D3" at the top of his lungs for 5 minutes isn't going to help you in the least. Be clear and concise. I recommend trying to get your hands on a copy of Dynasty Dysected, they have a great part on what to do as a team in a game situation. If you can't find a copy, there's a sweet synopsis in the "Tips/Tricks/Strategies" forum. MOST of all, have fun. Remember that this is just a game, and you're out there because you love paintball. Hope this helps!

Just to give you some food for thought: you will probably get owned your very first tournament no matter what. Doesn't mean you should go if you don't want to.
Also: Dynasty Dysected is (or at least was) on YouTube, and you should definitely check out 2 stickies in the tournament forum called Back Player 101 and Front Player 101. There were also a couple of threads called Dorito 101 and Snake 101 a few months back you could check out too.

I played 15 games of speedball before my first tournament and we took 1st place undefeated. Second tournament, same thing.

What I am getting at is it all comes down to how much you put into the TEAM and of course your own personal skills. Be a boss on the field WITH your team and know in the back of your head that you got this. If you lose, it is for a reason (or multiple) which can be learned from and overcome the next time around.
