Do you know what a turbo timer is? I doubt you do, so I'll explain why I need it. After you run a turbo car hard the oil will start to boil in the turbo. If you just turn the car off without letting the oil cool back down you get coking. Premature oil break down and goop build up. Its also nice to have remote start to let it warm up before jumping in and gunning it. See, you learned something today.

Nothing but a turbo(two, actually, because I found a cheap Holset after I bought a Turbonetics), FMIC, Cometic HG, a head rebuild kit(don't need it, but doing it anyway since I'm about to be throwing over 2 bar at this thing), a set of custom axles and a ported exhaust manifold. I still have to buy injectors, a computer, plugs and wires, a high volume oil pump, a turbo timer, a BOV, intake piping and other stuff. You can pretty much count on spending 5 grand over what you spent on the car to get it to your liking, unless you want to keep it stock.
Yeah, you can go ahead and keep jumping to conclusions.

The fix his M5 needed came with a 5-digit invoice.

I would love to see some links saying that oil boils in your turbo.

You have never spent 10 grand in all of your cars combined? Then no, you've never "built" a car.

I said "a 5-digit invoice"

That could be anywhere from $10,000 to $99,999.

Also, those links all said it's to stop burning oil. None said anything about boiling.

Its not just any turbo car. They are usually found in custom set ups running higher boost levels and they can be engineered around. Not necessary in all applications even at high boost levels. Its also not just because of the oil. Some turbo internals can be damaged from the temp changes.

Regardless if you are having this happen you have other problems you should address.

Reasonable. In short, cheap & reliable if I had to choose.

I dont care about fast, its about the driver for me. Most people cant put down 100% of what a "fast" car is capable of. Or even a slow car for that matter. Rally platform is the key here. What im looking for is capable. Anything with a turbo can be made fast in terms of horse power. Really the answer is to spend more money and get a better car.

Reliable, im looking for something that can take a beating. That was designed to. An eagle talon isn't that car by any means.

The problem is, my location doesn't have any of these great finds you guys have. Also another deal is any of these stock turbo cars aren't going to be T3. So ill need a new manifold / turbo regardless. With that comes a custom exhaust.

Its another money pit. Not that im not willing. Its just im not willing to sink my teeth into some piece of **** I hate. Something like an audi 1.8t, I would be willing because it provides street-ability aswell. Comfort. Class. Etc.

E30 325ix
Audi 1.8t
Audi 2.8
Audi S4
Subaru WRX
VW R32
Golf 4-motion (if they make those)

Are the cars id consider for this project.

I run 16+psi, a turbo timer is preferred. Of course you can run high boost without it, but you'll just have to leave the keys in the car after long full throttle runs. I prefer to be able to get out. Another big thing is the timers are usually part of systems that have remote start. That is important as well, as you don't want to just get in and floor a cold turbo motor. Push a button while your taking a shower and let it warm itself up.

You don't have to find a car with a factory turbo as long as you find one with forged internals and an appropriate C/R for boost. You can buy head plates for VR6 and 1.8T motors which are essentially just spacers that lower the C/R without needed to change pistons. HPA used to make them, not sure if they still do. As you mentioned, you'll probably need to buy a new header for a T3 anyway so it won't help much buying a factory turbo car vs just putting a turbo on an N/A car.

A "rally" platform is up for debate. If you mean AWD, that's one thing. But rally platforms are on opposite ends of the world than street car platforms. You are looking at tube chassis, stripped down race cars vs production cars. A stock STi isn't going to do what a rally STi will do. The only thing they share in common is the block and peak power output. Historically vehicles with frames hold up to pounding better than unibodies but they weigh a lot more. Its why trucks use frames and most cars don't. What you want is the lightest possible vehicle with a chassis that can be braced. The lighter it is, the less bracing you'll need.

The Mazda 323 might be one you want to look at. Those in AWD were incredible cars. The stock motors are weak but upgrades are cheap and easy. I personally think they look good too.

If only Ford would have brought the magnificant Escort AWD to the states. Across the pond they are a dime a dozen.

He wants reliable. Eclipse/Talon GSX cars can make serious power and handle like they are on rails but they aren't even close to reliable. The can't really be made reliable either if you plan on high boost or demanding driving. I still like them and they are cheap. Just not DD material.

Yes my TT supra that was seized by the USBP , had a nice warning to tell you to keep the car idling for 5 min after spirited driving . You can either get a turbo timer or not buy a terribly engineered piece of crap . I choose the later.
