I would consider using .50 cal at my field we play at.

The benefits outweigh the cons here in canada.

Paint having issues not breaking, Well its cold and up on a mountain where i play, so this could fix the issue by chilling the paint.

Paint cost - a case is $80. If i could pay 80-100$ for a case of 4000 This would save me money.

Size of paint - Shooting people between cracks would help a ton.

- The 285-300FPS limit. a 68 Cal ball at 300 fps is about 13 joules, a 50cal is about 5 joules. It's about half the distance.
Masks are rated for 300FPS. If you take a 50 cal at 1.2 grams at 13 joules, you get about 482 FPS. at 5 joules you get 299FPS.

If paintball regulations change for the FPS rule on .50 cal paint to atleast 450-480, You will have the same impact force as the 68 caliber, fixing the issue with paint not breaking on impact.

Some of you may think 482FPS is outrageous and will never happen, but don't think of how much a .68cal paintball weighs.

1.2 grams(50 cal) 3.2 grams (68cal)
5 joules @ 299.42 FPS 13.385 joules @ 300 FPS
135.2Ft effective range 135.46Ft effective range

Now If you could have the regulations changed at 300FPS to the 482FPS limit at 13 joules(the same kinetic force of a 68cal hitting your mask/body). You will have the same breakage, and an effective range of 218 feet.

But this is all theory that makes me wonder. If you can shoot it faster, it will have the same force as a 68.
This quote is crazy information and news to me. However I ball in the Northeast and feel that even if 50 cal ever took off AT ALL, the fields wont allow 400+ FPS speeds. This will mean that you cannot shoot as far. The paint marks will be WAAAY too small and will cause more cheating, especially with the youth age margin. Paint distributers prefer 68 cal and they KNOW the market. The sport would radically evolve and be more of an honor system like airsoft which I have stopped playing because I often do not feel the pellets or do not want to get out, like many others. More refs will need to exist and fields cannot pay that. Just my 2 cents, don't bash on my thoughts too hard as I respect Mr. Canada's opinion and see the other side, there COULD be a middle ground somehow but I doubt its gonna takeoff.

This is not considering that a paintball breaks an disperses the force, yes a .68 cal monsterball at 300 and a .50 monsterball at 482 may have the same force, but I'd bet you a nickel a slower moving projectile that broke would hurt less than a faster one, regardless of size. And idk about you buy I don't wanna get bunkered and have already sharp cutting shell going 182fps faster into my skin. Just a thought.

if you are going to take physics into account you also have to think, although they are both at 13 joules, size was not a factor in the equation. there will be the same amount of force in a smaller area if you regulate based on joules.

It's not based in joules, but feet per second. Ergo, the lighter projectile will travel a shorter distance, have less energy and break less often.

You know what I'll be proactive here, please read number 9.
This kinda proves that fps can be changed for 50cal...
if you look on those rules airsoft is at 400 fps which is a much smaller caliber than .68 but closer to .50
airsoft players dont even require a facemask, just goggles.
so, is it possible they can change the rules for .50 cal, yes. Is it likely... Not really, unless 50 cal does take off.

If they were going to change it, they would have for .43 (or .62 for that matter), and they did not.

Time to stop beating the dead horse, it isn't getting up.

Airsoft is 1 Joule. Yes, 1 joule. By your logic if 1 Joule = 400fps then 50 caliber would be 340fps because 50 claiber is 5 Joules

See the math?

1J = 400 FPS
13J = 300 FPS

Difference 12J = 100 FPS, 100/12 = 8.33 * 5J = 340 FPS.

It still needs to be at least 450 FPS to even come close to matching 68 caliber.

Behold! Science in action!

Regardless, the insurance companies have said no to greater than 300 FPS, and that isn't something any of us can alter. Enjoy.

It would curve like crazy at 450, it is too small and people want to see when they hit someone and feel when they are hit. Any hunter knows you don't use a high velocity bb sized buck shot to take down a deer you use a heavy buc shot. And for the record, paintball gear in Canada is pretty similar in price to US, especially on markers and higher priced gear, it's just our tax is more. Paintballs are $29 to $60-70 for good ones like evil or marbs or all star. Further for the record it is not GI Milsim or Kingman that desides if we switch to the smaller paintball it is you the market. If we all bought 50 cal, 68 would be gone. However most players know smaller is not as effective in any area except efficiency and cost. considering paintball is a sport where your amatures spend more than almost any other sport, I don't think it will change any time soon.

Before that we had speedball, people hated speedball, telling them it was a fad and would die out.
Time and time you have the kids at the time who think they know it all trying to tell companies what they will or won't do. Companies know that within a year most of you will be gone and in will come a whole new set of impressionable young minds and bulging wallets.
Well it's nearly a year later, it's no longer played at any of my local fields, you can't find hardly any equipment online anymore to buy, and every craigslist is filled with someone selling 50 caliber guns and equipment. I guess the verdict is in.

what the hell are you talking about? .50 cal is already dead? it never really took off at all. it hasnt hit small fields, or even medium sized fields. its nothing to be a threat at all.

I honestly don't think .50 cal play will come in to threaten .68. .68 will be more accurate cause of weight and break easier

That's funny. We sell about 10 cases a weekend of .50 cal. Our customers love it. When you have young kids in large groups the 50 works WAY better. And as far as real worl application we see zero performance issues with 50. I went on our field and hit the same corner to corner shot with 50 as easily as a 68.
I sell all kinds of 50 cal markers by GI. People love it here.....
