Informant: NYPD paid me to 'bait' Muslims

NEW YORK (AP) — A paid informant for the New York Police Department's intelligence unit was under orders to "bait" Muslims into saying inflammatory things as he lived a double life, snapping pictures inside mosques and collecting the names of innocent people attending study groups on Islam, he told The Associated Press.

Shamiur Rahman, a 19-year-old American of Bangladeshi descent who has now denounced his work as an informant, said police told him to embrace a strategy called "create and capture." He said it involved creating a conversation about jihad or terrorism, then capturing the response to send to the NYPD. For his work, he earned as much as $1,000 a month and goodwill from the police after a string of minor marijuana arrests.

Don't see a problem with it. Its the same as putting the speed limit up on a sign, if someone violates the limit, its not the signs fault.

Ok, I am going to put a sign up on your street that says 25MPH. Now, you drive past it and you go "**** that I want to go 30" and you do, and you get pulled over. Is that the signs fault? NO...its YOUR stupid fault for ignoring the law.

Reading the article i fail to see anything really done wrong and "bait" is used to spice up the headlines from my point of view. He was having a conversation with them about a specific topic and reporting back what the response was. Do I see the grey area they were playing... yeah I do. However all these conversations from what i gathered reading the article took place publicly where there would be no reasonable expectation of privacy so the cops aren't technically doing anything wrong. If anything I see this like the sudden surge in open carry idiots that will openly challenge law enforcement when questioned. While it is within what is allowed, it might not be the greatest idea and you can see how someone might be made uncomfortable by it. It's a matter of people don't wanna be followed, listened to, or filmed really but when you are out in public there really is no expectation of privacy and what you say can be noted, documented, and filmed, for pretty much any purpose.

So if i walked up to you in a bar, and said man i wish this president would(fill in the blank) and you agreed with me, then it would be cool with you to spend the rest of your life in jail for threats?

It sucks, but it's the reality us Muslims are facing in America today. To tell you the truth, it's the least of my worries. We're a stronger population than the douche bags at the NYPD anyway. You only have so much push on a population of mostly doctors, engineers, scientists, and lawyers.

To agree with yesme (scary) I don't think people would approve if they were going to conservative churches and saying "Man, that obama guy, huh. I wish someone would, like, get rid of him right?" And then they throw anyone in jail who agrees.

I agree. However, I think they should also bait the crazy militia/sepratist groups as well as anti-abortion groups... I think they are a just as big a threat as any muslim nutters.

You would get no argument from me. While I see no problem with Militia as an idea, too many of them take it far far off the deep end. Add to that list any of the extremist religious groups (including all the bat **** insane chrisitans) and I think you have the right idea in mind.

You do realise it is aganst federal law for you to even talk about doing such. Back in highschool someone wrote on a chalkboard somthing to the affect of "save the world **** the P********" (* in place of letters I am NOT going to type it out). The secret service came and took him for 2 days for observation and questiong. Just what you typed alone could be pondered as borderline, perhaps a quick email to the secret service is in order.
