Autocockers VS. Automags

Haven't posted a thread in a while, and I don't really know much about Automags but I know they're classic mechs like 'cockers so what are your opinions on the two?

When you talk about mags v. cockers there are only two kinds of people... Mag folks and cocker folks. I being the later will tell you the cocker is the one and only way to go. My field operator is a mag guy and will tell you the opposite. Both of us are old, fat, slow, toothless and balding.... Take it for what it is worth.

I'm definitely "team 'cocker", so take what I say with a grain of salt....

I never saw an automag that could consistently deal well with the cold. All winter long, as we played there be a point where one of the mags would stick and suddenly there was this very distinct and loud hiss as all their CO2 was venting out the gun. Usually followed by a loud string of expletives by whoever's game just finished. It wasn't every 'mag every match...but if there were 'mags out there, you'd hear it several times a day.

Maybe using HPA fixes that, I dunno.

Either one. They're both fantastic.

Mag

My first marker was a 68 Automag classic body (was a teenager, and couldn't afford the Powerfeed at the time). I bought it back in like 1996/97. I'm Mag all day. Went from that to an RT Valved custom built Mag (Intelliframe/feed, polished body, etc). Then to a Warp Feed left Emag.

Tom Kaye FTW!

OP is right, though. In terms of old school ballers there's pretty much Cocker and Mag people. You're one or the other.

I had a friend who was a die hard cocker fan, and I remember laughing at him constantly as he tech'd his Cocker and boasting about how reliable my mag was (in all honesty looking back he was just a sucky marker tech!).

Both, though, have a big place in paintball history.

Automags are the veterans of the sport. You cannot go wrong with one.

My 1st gun was an Automag in '94 or so. Had a couple of them and liked them for the most part. They were much better w/ compressed air vs. CO2. I liked the quick release barrel, but do think that the 'Mag wasn't as accurate as a Cocker because of it. There was some company that came along that made a body that took Cocker threads. My team mate had one and it rocked. My fav that I had, was a MiniMag w/ Smart Parts 16" All American barrel. My team mate was a machinist and made an extended fore grip before they were popular. Loved it and always got compliments on it. One had to practice at the trigger or short stroking could and very frequently, did occur.

Switched to Cockers at some point to satisfy the tinkerer in me. Loved the idea of totally building a gun from the ground up w/ exact parts that I wanted. I do think the Cockers were more accurate and more consistent. When they worked, they worked great. When they didn't, they were a nightmare. Getting the timing correct took some doing, but when one figured out the mechanics of it, Cockers could be rock solid. Had an early Lapco barrel (grey one, not black) for my Cocker and it was a dart shooter, but loud as hell. If you had a shot break in the gun, they were easier to clean out quickly. That shroud that went over the front pneumatics sucked, but as I found out, when an incoming shot hit the little hoses off of the 3way, you were SOL. There was something very gratifying about using a home built Cocker that worked and worked well.

I wouldn't mind getting either as I would guess they are still pretty viable for rec' ball.

Mags are bullet proof. And say whatever you want about the cocker being gental on paint; the lvl10 is leaps and bounds better. Had the lvl10 been produced 5-10 years earlier I dare say all the cocker guys would have jumped ship!

I've been researching used guns to get back into the sport. I'm surprised I'm seeing Mag's running for a little more than the Cockers.

Very very very tempted for a Mag......very.

I went through phases in each of the camps, but I had 2 cockers that I still miss. Evolution cockers and sonic cockers are just simply fantastic. With the right 3-way and spring set a cocker is silky smooth to shoot. Mags are a little more rugged and are in many ways the predecessor to the blowforward spools on the market now. I lean more towards autocockers, but mags definitely have their place.

i've owned all the mag versions and owned all the stock wgp cockers at one time or another. both are great, cockers are for those that like to tinker. for those that remember the armson barrels, add that onto a mag and the egos would sound like a muffle in comparison.

i recently built a cocker from scratch and still my prefer marker over my electros
