you just need a decent guitar, don;t buy a super cheap one, cuz they always go out of tune, and sound terrible.

I learned to play the guitar since high school and am nearly in my 30's now. I did'nt get lessons though but it would have been great if i had.

I'm teaching myself guitar right now, mostly from resources found online or just playing along to songs, but also from some friends who are very experienced. I'm wondering though, are songbooks/guitar lesson books worth buying? Or is it just a minor supplement, but not overly helpful?

Well, songbooks are good so long as you know how to read music.

My personal favorite are the Fretboard Roadmaps books by Fred Sokolow. Very easy to understand, very useful core knowledge, and while not entirely detailed it gives you a start down whatever path you choose to take.

Also, these two sites have become invaluable to me over the years:

i would definately just go to guitar center and talk with a rep there (true the may just try to push the most expensive, but in the end its nice for the instant feed back and not being just dropped into one catagory) and also i would look into barrowing a friends guitar and playing because a large majority of the deal is learing the instrument not just which brand works best with what kind of music you like. also going to the store lets you feel the guitar (a lot like paintball you may like the stats and not the feel of your guitar just like you may a gun)

I wouldn't buy a guitar from guitar center.

They allow customers to beat the **** out of them. Litterally you see people jamming so hard and pick up another guitar. You want a guitar that hasn't been picked up by 5,000 customers a day. Its a great store just not for guitars lol.

I bought my dj equipment from there. I wouldn't buy anything instrument related from there though.

I have a question, I got a guitar (brand new) from guitar center for $89 and it has two Gibson p90 pickups in it. I noticed the pickups sell for $141 each, so how is it that two of them are in my guitar for only $89 total? Do they just inflate the price when they sell the pickups separately? And because of this, would it be possible for me to profit from this by buying a bunch of these guitars and selling the pickups for more money?
