As the tittle says im curious of what is the purpose of taping the tip of the barrel for?

Two reasons:

Try and protect the anno on the tip from wear against bunkers

Keep moisture/water out of the barrel when it is raining or in wet conditions. The tape covers the porting of the barrels in an effort to cut down the amount of water getting into the barrel and cause issues.

Tournament players do this to prevent paint from getting inside the barrel when it's rubbed up against air bunkers. When goopy paint is in your barrel, accuracy goes down the drain.

another reason i believe, in rainy conditions (i heard from jason edwards of damage in DerDer's Campaign video), was to tape the ends and then poke the bottom portings to prevent the mists from the blocking your view.

It is used in tournaments in the rain. To keep water out of the barrel which would affect accuracy and to stop clouds of smoke blocking your view. Any tape works. It is to serve a function and whatever tape you have on hand is what you use. People who have it in any other situation are trying to look cool.
