can you guys help me out with this? I'm trying to help my friend with his BSOD problems, but googling the error codes leaves a lot to be desired as far as instructions go.

Here are his dump files: http://www.mediafire.com/?83dk1gg8ncaexj3

That is about $30 cheaper per 120/128GB than other more recent generation SSDs, so it seems like a good deal. However it uses a Sandforce controller which has a history of issues and inflated benchmark performance. I strongly suggest anyone looking to spend money on a SSD do so on one with a Marvel (Samsung 830) or Indilinx (OCZ Vertex 4) controller. These controllers wont put themselves in a bind and can handle un-compressible data much better than Sandforce controllers. Right now these drives are running about $100 per 120/128GB; and if you can afford the larger 240/256GB drives to go ahead and get them over the smaller versions because they will take more stored data before performance starts to decline (all SSDs do this).

Additionally Run Core isn't a manufacturer that has been around in the memory or storage business like the others common OEMs, which makes me uneasy about a track history. Also they're an international company with no toll free phone number to reach out to for support, which also worries me about support if/when it is needed.

I am glad to see you got a SSD, because it is the best "bang" for the buck as it relates to an upgrade. I hope your Run Core drive has a long life as well, but you were warned previously to get the Samsung 830 or OCZ Vertex 4.

The 830 uses Samsung's own controller, not Marvell's. I'm not sure why this is such a common misconception.

I stand corrected:

Quote:
Their Samsung 830 Series SSD is not based on the very common SandForce or Marvell controllers. The company uses their own design called S4LJ204X01. This controller is based on a triple core ARM processor, similar to what you have in your smartphone. The flash chips and controller DRAM are also produced by Samsung which means the company has full control over every component in their drive, certainly a unique situation.
The point of avoiding Sandforce controllers, and the 830 or Vertex 4 recommendations are still very much valid though.

I ordered corsair and got this. It works for what I need and has fantastic reviews across the board. I was actually recommended to avoid OCZ due to their high failure rate.

If it fails, it fails. It was a cheap way to dip my toe in the SSD pool. I'm not storing anything life changing on there, so I'm not too worried.

Also, they do have a US number as well as a US office. It's in California.

OCZs with Sandforce controllers were crap. When they bought Indilinx and went the way Samsung did with the 830 in OCZ's Vertex 4, it is a whole new world for OCZ products.

If I ordered a Corsair drive and got some no name drive, I would be sending it back personally. It is bait and switch which is high frowned upon by the trade commission. Like I said, I do hope it has a long life for you; but please don't recommend one over more common and trusted drives.

It seems to be pretty trusted, at least by SSD review and legit reviews.

They offered a refund, but it works. I'm happy with the reviews and the performance. I don't see a reason to fret about it.

Posting this in here cause I have a feeling the GDT won't take it seriously.

Will a laptop from 2 years ago suffer from the battery being ****ty if it's used almost exclusively while being plugged in and the battery is rarely, if ever, discharged?

If the battery isn't being used, probably not, although it'll probably run a bit warmer than if the battery was out or if it was on battery power. Couldn't hurt to pull the battery if it's going to be plugged in for an extended period of time, though.

No, it wont. The way I see it, the battery is like a long like UPS for the laptop. Performance isnt harmed if the battery is ****ty. From what I know, the laptop works off of AC power while plugged in while also charging the battery. When unplugged, something in the circuitry tells it to switch to battery power.

My Intel 520 series hasn't given me any problems even with it being 3/4 full. Then again Intel's SSD's with sandforce came out way behind OCZ. I'm gonna say OCZ probably just rushed theirs out to be the fastest at that point in time. Intel's SSD's have yet to disappoint me.

Also on the laptop. It won't affect it while it is plugged in but the battery is more than likely shot. Really depends how often the laptop was unplugged and plugged back in. Either way if it's plugged in the battery won't be a problem. My old laptop's battery was dead and it worked fine plugged in, but once unplugged it would instantly die.

Cherry Browns are awesome. I own two mechs now, one with blue and one with brown, the browns are by far my favorite.

The fans on my CM N250 stopped working. I tried my stock CPU cooler and those worked. The fans had no dust so I removed it and returned it to CompUSA.

Funny timing, they had a sale going on

The card was on sale for $399 + a $10 store GC. The H60 was on sale for $49.99, only $15 more than my CM N250. Not bad

Haha

I know I don't need the water cooler, but it was $20 more and on sale for a good deal. It looks purdy too.

Time to play dishonored

I made sure not to get the GTX670 FTW LE. I guess those are the ones that didn't quite pass the OC tests or something like that. From what I read, the 670 FTW is build on the 680 PCB. Should be a reliable card.

The ***** at compusa was talkin **** about EVGA warranty service. I almost got personally offended...I don't know why
