My 330i? It's E90.
I'm thinking older than E46 for a toy though.

I think I'd only want an e30 if it wasn't a 4 cylinder.

reason i was wondering was. i constantly think the same thing. why not get a cheap car to **** around with. Then i realize, if i put that much money into my e90, it would be pretty bad ***.

I agree, but the E90 is currently my only car. I can't afford to risk taking on a big project with it and then having something go wrong, leaving me unable to get to work.
I guess I could buy a beater to use to get to/from work with the plan of leaving the E90 parked most of the time, but I can almost guarantee that not driving the E90 wouldn't happen, especially if the "beater" isn't something I can have fun in (such as an older bimmer)

Sounds legit...
What oil are you running in it? If it's got thick oil in it it, or old oil, that might be the issue.
I know with the 3000gts, they changed the lifters for '99 and increased the size of the channels that oil flow through, greatly reducing the lifter tick and such when the engine was cold or didn't have brand new oil in it.

Found a good, inexpensive mechanic. Gonna do Vanos, waterpump, other misc stuff, front control arms and rtabs. New fluids going in this week and then I'm going to slowly start replacing other suspension stuff/drop it a bit

Driven the car <1000 miles... more like <500 miles, previous owner did the oil so I never thought to dump/change it. Guess I will be soon, I'd be amazed if the oil changes it.
@Alan777; No one who actually wants a E30 to enjoy gets a Eta. Straight 6 til' I die.

Bought that green E36 M3 today, took the 4hr drive home and it ran fine. Got an hour away and was accelerating from 4th-5th gear. Instead of hitting 5th I went into 3rd gear for like 2 seconds tops and the engine revved up to 4k. I was going around 55-65mph.
Ten seconds later the check engine light comes on and now there is some noise coming from the front of the engine. Hard to describe, more like whinning? Doesn't sound like knocking..and I can't tell if it changes with rpm's. But you can hear it when standing in front of the car. I mean the car runs fine still but wtf.
I had no choice but to drive the 60miles home as I was in bum**** no where. Hopefully I didn't do any major damage. I saved up so much to buy this car and if its broken i'm beyond ****ed.

maybe it is a belt. pretty hard to diagnose over the internet. it could even be a worn bearing. I am at the university of oregon right now. where are you in oregon?

it could even be a pully. if your check engine light came up get your codes read. most places will do it for free because it means their is a problem with your car and they can fix it

I did that twice when I bough my car, thankfully I caught it both times and smashed the clutch down before it fully engaged. It probably doesn't help that my shifter had like 3 inches of play.
If it only went up to 4k I can't imagine you messing anything serious up.
