soooo how hard is it to fix a suck lifter?
M54 engine. Sounds like it's coming from the front most exhaust valve... The ticking is driving me bloody insane.

try running some sort of "oil cleaner" first. But get the engine piping hot before you add it, then run the engine at 2k rpm after you add if for 10 min and then immediatly change the oil. other wise, take the cams off, it sucks

Someone said it maybe the valves, I legit haven't had time to check them- went on vacation to DC and now I'm swamped with trial cases. Any other thoughts besides valves?

Sounds more like sticky lifters to me.
If you were off a tooth it would idle and run very rough.
If it's got hydraulic lifters, over time they'll get clogged up with **** and loud.
You could try pulling them out and soaking them in diesel or kerosene overnight and trying to manually move the internals around a bit and then put them back in to see if that fixes them. Shouldn't be too difficult a job and it doesn't cost anything to do besides replacing the valve cover gasket and buying the diesel/kerosene.
Though I don't know BMWs very well so someone else might have a better suggestion.

Sometimes you just need to buy a new set of lifters for these cars. And now its cheaper to just buy a used set.
Shouldn't be too difficult a job and it doesn't cost anything to do besides replacing the valve cover gasket and buying the diesel/kerosene.
You will need special tools and the know how. Not to discourage anyone but if this is your first motor build I wouldn't start with a dual vanos, BMW straight six.
Though I don't know BMWs very well so someone else might have a better suggestion.

Pain in the balls. Your motor has dual vanos, which is a pain in the balls to do. Its about ~14 bolts away from doing a headgasket.
How many miles do you have? Sometimes flushing the oil will help if the cause is from sludge.

I was talking to no_caffeine, who has an e30. I don't think his motor has VANOS...

Drop and clean oil pan (not sure if you have a pressure gauge), Run a 0w-40 oil and rev it and it might just clear up whatever is blocking it. It's probably not stuck, just not getting enough oil.

Well when it's cold it doesn't make any noise and sound fine. Starts ticking louder the hotter it gets.
What will cleaning the pan do? Is there a filter in there as well? Also would the gauge be to check the oil pressure? I don't have one but I can probably borrow one or buy one. Where would it hook into?
I'm mechanically competent to a point. I can do pretty much anything with a guide...
I tried running atf in it for a little bit and it didnt help either.
it has 95k miles on it.

This is why you clean the pan.

Well I can't quote what you said because you replied, in my quote.
It's not my first rodeo with E30s. I did the headgasket / timing belt on the 87 I had just sold. If it sounds like sticky lifters to you guys that's something I'm going to consider and look into. Thanks for the advice.
ASC thanks for the PM as well.

It sounds exactly like the ticky lifters on my 3000gt, except it sounds like there's more than one.
Do you have any other reasons to think your motor is being starved of oil?

Whats the deal with the shifter? Looks like a chrome ZHP knob. Haven't seen that before. Purple tints are the only thing I dont like but thats a real easy fix. And the lux door panels & wood trim are deffinatly more important than tints. Very clean & nice indeed.

I was missing the oil sprayer tube that goes over the lifters because according the previous owner, who btw owns a legitimate business in racing and making E30 parts stated, "We don't run those on our race cars..."
So I've since put that piece on and obviously the clunking continues. Other than that I've been knocking out cars with my buddy that he has lined up just to clear some time to get my car in the garage. I'm hoping to have it figured out soon with the price of 93 through the ceiling.
