Exclamation HPA tank problem, help please!

Ok, so i went paintballing today. I was using my 45/4500 pure energy hpa tank that i bought used from someone here on pbnation. It was working great, no leaks or anything. However, at the end of the day when i went to unscrew it from my asa (i have a standard asa, not an on/off), the bottle started to unscrew from the reg/ bonnet or whatever its called. It freaked me out because i didnt realize until it was almost half way off. Air started spewing out until it was empty. I thought it was going to fly off and kill someone. I screwed the bottle back into the reg/bonnet afterwards. But i dont know if its safe to use. I wouldnt want the bottle to come out in the middle of a game and kill somone. Can someone please help me out! What should i do? I cant unscrew the bottle from the reg/bonnet by hand right now, i tried. But i still dont know if its safe. The only thing i though of doing was unscrewing the bottle, putting blue loctite on the threads and screwing it back on. But im not sure.

Odds are the tiny screws that hold the bonnet to the reg came loose or aren't there. Do NOT put loctite on the bonnet threads. Although some pictures would help as well.

Was it just the bonnet or the whole reg? If it is reg you just need to get it tightened back down. You can remove the reg no problems.

i think it was the reg that was unscrewing. When i tried to unscrew the tank, i grabbed it by the bottle and the bottle started coming out by itself while the reg and bonnet stayed screwed into the gun. How do i tighten the reg? its round so i dont know what tool i could possibly use to tighten it. If i try to unscew the reg by hand right now, i cant. So its on there somewhat tight, but i dont know if its tight enough.

I would send it to a airsmith if you dont know what your are doing.

Btw, HPA tanks have a safety system where when the reg begins to unsrew from th bottle, the air vents out and it doesnt turn into a rocket, so no worries.

Grasping the tank body puts leverage on the cylinder/reg threads and is one of the worst places you can actually start to unscrew the tank from because of the leverage.
Once you get the regulator secured back onto the bottle I would get into the habit of breaking the regulator free from your asa by starting to unscrew the system by grasping the regulator. Once you get a turn or two on it and know it's not binding or otherwise hard to remove you can grasp the tank body then.
If you don't have a on/off asa though I would continue to hold the regulator to unscrew the system.

alright ill be sure to do that next time, thanks. But i just want to be sure thats its safe to use. The bottle wont fly off by itself right? I know someone above me said that they have a safety feature where all the air purges out if the bottle starts to come out, but i dont want to take any chances.

As long as you secure the regulator you will be fine.
The only way a tank would ever come off on it's own if it's the threading on the cylinder or reg were to snap off. That's won't happen just from regular use.

You want tool force to secure it. If it unscrewed once it can happen again. Take it to your shop, explain it started to unscrew and you want to make sure it's secured with some tool force if they can help.

Theres no shops anywhere near me Maybe my local field (cousins pb staten Island) will secure it for me. They are the only place on the island that might be able to help. Next time i go to play i will ask if they can tighten it and see what happens. Thanks for all the help!

Generic tank reg picture.

Was the chrome part unscrewing from the tank or the black part?

If chrome part, the screws to hold the bonnet in place are loose or missing.

If black part, the reg was unscrewing from the bottle.

Based on your description about how it was venting gas, I'm thinking it was the bonnet was unscrewing. If the reg was unscrewing off of a pressured 4500 and it was venting from the threads, the pressure probably would've sent it airborne.

It was the black part (the reg) that was unscrewing. It didnt unscrew by itself. It was my fault. I had the tank on their so damn tight so when i grabbed the bottle to try to unscrew the tank from the gun, the reg stayed put while only the bottle started to unscrew. Air shot out rly fast until it was down to 0 psi. i then screwed the bottle back on and took the entire tank off of the gun easily afterwards.

Loctite is your friend. Put on VERY little. Let dry. Screw on tank and try to torque a little with a strap wrench if you have one.

Have the shop secure it for you, don't mess around with something that could be so dangerous.

Also, put a little bit of silicone grease on the ASA threads and the bonnet threads. It'll screw in and unscrew more smoothly. Save the bonnet threads a little bit of wear.

The guy don't know what he's doing. Has no idea what could happen, theres no reason to tell him anything to do to fix it other than take it to a professional.
