it clearly is a downgrade, but the 1d2 is only capable of boost iso @ 3200. that's not nearly enough to make a useable image under stadium lights. a properly exposed image at 6400 iso will be less noisy than an underexposed image at 3200 iso. You're most likely going to be shooting at 1/320 under stadium lights if you're only shooting at iso 3200, which means an image that isn't sharp, and with plenty of noise. on the other hand, you'd have a sharp image with more noise shooting with a 50D and 6400 iso. but at least it's sharp/useable.

Yeah, I guess. If he's under bad stadium lighting, it's going to be hard to get anything to keep anyway even when shooting on hot spots on the field. Then again, I have no idea what fields in NV do for lighting.

regardless, if he's gotta shoot in that lighting, he's gotta shoot in that lighting. I recommended a 7D over both the 1d2 and the 50D as long as his funding/budget allows for it. used 7D's can be had for under 900 on FM and POTN

I used one at 6400 iso to shoot indoor paintball. It had to be done, obviously my photo's weren't all that great, but it's what I had to do to get the shot. I prefer the 50D as a photo camera as opposed to my 60D.
