So I agree with Joe. We should sticky a GDT in this sub. I actually like college football and don't really want to see this thread cluttered with inane crap.

Agreed, but then we'd have two during the offseason.

Offseason is different. I'm talking about having one strictly during the regular season so trolling brad for Silas Redd leaving his overrated daycare center doesn't get lost among hype for the iPhone 4S-2.

So I want a handgun for personal protection and to go to the shooting range with. I'll probably get a ccw as well, just because I think it would be a good exercise to go through to obtain. (would also make transporting the gun easier).

Never shot a real gun before as I grew up in a house that opposed them, but I live on my own now and feel like utilizing my 2nd amendment rights.

I know about as much about handguns as I do on Einstein's theory of relativity; which is to say, nothing more than the very basics. Consider me an open book. Where should I begin?

I would suggest going to a shooting range where you can rent various handguns and try a few different types out. If you have friends with different types of handguns, see if you can borrow theirs and go to the range. For caliber, .45 has great stopping power, but if you are also going to shoot for fun it is the most expensive. If money isnt an issue, then go .45 all day err day.

Here is what I did/would do again:

1) Take the safety course. In my state this is required for the permit, but Mass is a liberal anti-gun haven, you may not need it in your state. However since you have never been around guns before I think its a good idea to take it and familiarize yourself with how they operate. I knew nothing when I took the course and walked away with a decent understanding.

2) I recommend starting with a full size 9mm. 9mm is the cheapest caliber that could still be effectively used for self defense. The low cost allows you to practice more and become better. In addition, the recoil is pretty low, so its easier to shoot for a new shooter. The full size also helps minimize the recoil. If you want to carry, you could go with a compact instead of a fullsize, but I wouldn't go with a subcompact. They are harder to grip and less pleasant to shoot. You want something comfortable in your hand and that will allow you to get a lot of practice in, because you will suck the first couple times out.

3) See if there is a public range that will allow you to rent guns. This is the best way to find out what is comfortable for you. If you can't do that, you will have to settle for handling them in the store.

I don't understand why gun safety isn't a course taught in every high school

If it were taught up here it would be like "guns are bad, mmmk. never go near one ever. they will just go off killing over 9000 children in the process"

Again, you can't teach common sense. Idiots with guns will always be a problem no matter how many safety courses you create or make them go through.

Great advice, thanks

Where did you go to take the course? That seems like a really good first step.

Renting also sounds like a good idea. Any recommendations on what type of gun I should be looking for when I rent them, or will i be able to just try as many as I want? Is recoil have more to do with the caliber of the bullet and less to do with the gun itself?

Thanks,

Thanks,
Rent a 1911, a Glock, and a revolver.

That covers the basics, your first time will be your most expensive.

I mean, pretty much every hand gun is different so you just got to get out there and try them. id start with a glock (i dont like glocks) or some other kind of 9mm then go from there

you are also in a part of the country where guns are much more a part of every day life. i cant imagine gun training in public schools going well in **** holes like east STL, Detroit or NOLA.

we had archery at my HS and kids would do dumb **** with that too. i dont think anyone was ever hurt but i am pretty sure they do not teach it anymore
