I have switched from playing in cleats to playing in barefoot runners.
Both my roommate and I wear them for paintball and training MMA. I have a pair of Merrel True Gloves and he has KSO Trek and KSO.
Both of us play on turf & grass for speedball and we play alot of rec ball n the woods in them.
I have slipped a few times myself on a really wet day during a tournament on grass but other then I notice that I can make harder moves in them then both my soccer and "paintball" (JT) cleats.
I love them for playing snake because I don't have to plant my foot and make sure that I have traction. I just have it when I need it by pushing right off my toes.
We have timed my runs across the field and I am a little faster in barefoot runners then cleats

One thing with these (they stress this when you buy them) rotate these into your footwear. It takes a while for the muscles in your feet to get used to them. It took me about 2 weeks of wearing mine off and on to get my legs used to them.
Your feet and calves will hurt like SOBs. You are using muscles that don't get utilized in normal shoes.
I made it a habit to bring my other paintball cleats with me just incase.

One thing, in the late fall and early winter, I do switch back to normal shoes because it is damn cold here (30*F - -30*F) and I personally haven't found a pair of barefoot shoes that are good for those temps

Im to lazy at the moment to read all this, ive played several times in my VFF's and love it, but there are alternatives to VFF's when it comes to paintball. For those of you still wanting as little shoe as possible but still want a cleat.. check out www.inov-8.com. super super light weight cleated minimalist shoes FTW! i suggest x-talon 190 or baregrip 200. i own a pair of the xtalon 212, i would suggest those for those new to minimalist shoes or those that want a little more shoe for paintball purposes, they are a little much for me, but that do work amazingly well

play in the five fingers but get ankle braces, (the looser ones made of that stretchy elastic material)

I use to play football til I shattered my ankle and ripped my achilles tendon.
it took over a year to walk right again. Now that I play paintball again finding good cleats is hard because at the end of the day my feet/ankles KILL ME.
What I do is I get football cleats (high tops) so it protects my ankle. I put a gel insert into them both as well and double up on the socks. I also wear an ankle brace and at the end of the day I am still good to go.

You could have bad arch support in your foot and that may be why your foot is bothering you as well. I would recommend getting an arch support/gel for your cleats.

I do not recommend getting these five finger shoes for paintball.
You risk more with the five finger shoes with ankle breaks than you would in football cleats.

and if you have any foot/ankle questions let me know. I have shattered both ankles twice, ripped my achilles tendon once. jacked up my nerves in one of my legs and now have metal plates, screws and staples in both feet.
I can answer most pain questions.

I have a pair of komodos and KSO treks and love them. Usually play in the treks since they're a bit older. I missstep alot with cleats, trip, overall clumbsy with them on. I dont know what it is, but when i wear my vibrams i actually move and run more while playing, it just feels more comfortable to run around and move up further.

I'm in the military, and over the course of almost 7 years now as a Paratrooper, I have destroyed my ankles and will undergo my 4th surgery next week. I have a pair of KSO's and Bikala LS's. I have played in both, however I have been very worried about injuring my ankle again. To mitigate this risk I wear an ankle brace. I know it has already been stated here a few times however it's serious enough to say again. DONT JUST JUMP INTO THESE THINGS! You should ease into them. Start wearing around the house, then walking, then running. Any more questions feel free to shoot me a PM.

I play in VFF Speed. They are like the Trek only they are more like shoes with laces. I have been wearing them for a year. No problems whatsoever.

On most days, five finger shoes will get the job done, maybe even a little better than most other shoes. If the ground is going to be grassy and wet though be sure to bring your cleats.

I used to wear cleats until I went to five fingers, I am probably one of the major people that shouldn't have done so because of all the ankle injuries I've had in crosscountry. I have torn all the muscles in my left ankle, sprained the both probably two times, and broken my right ankle. Thing is I wear high quality but semi flexible ankle braces to make up for the lack of ankle support. I also have a very narrow feet so it is really hard for me to find a pair of shoes that fits well and I've tried on a lot of these but I found a pair with laces (;

Here's what I use:
Vibram FiveFingers SPEED (In Black)
http://www.vibramfivefingers.com/pro...Speed-Mens.htm
2 Shock Doctor Ankle Stabilizers
http://www.amazon.com/Shock-Doctor-S...le+ankle+brace

This is a really good combo, and I'll use these for college track this coming season too. That is definitely what I would recommend.

I have a pair of $90 track cleats that I got for $40 on sale when I went to California's State Crosscountry race so I got a hell of a deal. They're the LIGHTEST things that I have EVER wore in my entire life, and they're just amazing...

Man as said above get better cleats...

Ive played in Five finger Vibrams and let me say it sucks. I was slipping everywhere and it was only about medium length grass as best..
didn't help either at the end of the day when i shot myself in the foot prior to a point....

Unless your playing on turf. I wouldn't recomend it.

I played in Fila Skeletoes until I detroyed them (also ran on asphalt with them).

Never had to worry about rolling my ankles, didn't have to worry about slipping, only thing that sucked was after a full day of wearing them they stink to high heaven.

Only reason I switched to Addidas Vigar was they were on sale.

Which ones did you wear? The KSO and alot of similar ones are smooth on the bottom, so they would be like playing paintball in skater shoes. Turf or grass, stuff like the Spyridon and Trek would be the best, as they have tread to them.

Not exactly sure.

They did have a little traction on the bottom though. When I say little though I mean little.
