gun - empire axe, great mid range gun. used for around 300$
hopper - i'd pick up a used rotor for around 90$
tank - also a used ninja tank for around 100$
mask - used dye i4's for around 50$
so total used: 540$
total new.. around 900$

Ninja makes their 50/4500 which would be perfect for his size probably. The mask could be too big it depends on head size and shape to be really sure he would need to be able to try it on before purchasing but i understand that is not always possible. I know people have said the v-force grillz are good for kids too though and also cheaper than i4's.

Are you looking for him to be able to play air ball or woods ball? I mean I've owned almost every mask in the game and the i4s are def the smallest. You can tighten them so small and I've noticed them being the most popular among young players, if your wanting to go woods ball I'd go with a tipmann A-5 it's more reliable then the 68. Get a nice barrel like a Dye UL .688 bore. Maybe a low end electric hopper like a Halo. No child is going to shoot after then that can feed. Tank wise we you can go with HPA it's more expensive and hard to find a small field with a HPA compressor. Or Co2 witch is cheap for the tank and easy to refill Even at a scuba shop. And you can always upgrade the A-5 to shoot faster with E triggers And things like that. Hope this helps. You don't need a ****ing axe and a rotor to play paintball.

^ It obviously depends on what he wants to do. Speedball and woodsball have different requirements. I, for one, have tried a Demon and it shot great, but it was extremely unreliable and I ran into many problems. I ended up getting a brand new DM12 and LOVE it. My setup: Grey Tiger i4 Goggles, Ninja Pro Reg with 2 shims removed (550psi setting with 1 shim in), Dye Rotor, and that's all I need. DM12s are very expensive, so I might look at getting a RELIABLE low-mid range gun. The Empire Axe is an amazing gun and very cheap for what you get. My friend has one with a Freak barrel set and he is a great player. Good luck and feel free to message me if you have any questions.

Even for an 8 year old, I would still recommend getting an electric marker for him. It can be used for speedball or woodsball. Here is some gear I would recommend for someone that young since I just did this for my cousin.
Mask: Dye I4, Vforce Grills, Empire Events. Don't get him a flex system.
Hopper: Any electric loader will work. The Rotor, prophecy, and Spire are great, but more expensive. An invert Halo Too hopper will work well also, but they don't have an anti-jam system.
Tank: Any 50 CU/ 4500 psi tank would work great for him. I would recommend Ninja, but every company makes a tank that size.
Marker: I would recommend the invert mini. It is a nice small marker that he will be able to use easily. If you want to make it fancier, you can all the Relay asa and a new barrel, but the marker will be small enough to use for someone that is smaller. IMO, the axe will be a little too big for him at this time.
Clothing/pack etc: Get him some good knee pads (volleyball ones work good for younger players. Invert also make good smaller sized knee pads). For clothing, Invert and Empire make some good youth pants. Have him try on some elbow pads and get what fits best. Don't worry about a jersey unless you get it for really cheap. Long sleeve tshirts work just as well.

Proto rail, halo too, 50/4500. Get him to try different masks on, and pick the one that fit's him most comfortably, regardless of price. His comfort and safety comes first.
I would usually suggest a 48/3000, but if you play as well, a 50/4500 wouldn't go to waste, and it'll be alot lighter and smaller for him to use.
The Rail isn't too expensive, and it will let him figure out what he likes to play without being out-gunned.
Don't forget the pads! Most over-looked piece of equipment in paintball.
I pretty much agree with Monkeyballer on all points, I just suggest the Rail over the mini because it'll save you some money, and still do what he needs it to. Kids can get bored with stuff pretty quick, no need to spend more than you have to. If he's sticking with it with any certainty, the mini would be a great option, as with upgrades it will grow with him.

You can cap the marker so that it only shoots a certain rate of fire. Chances are that he isn't going to be shooting over 10 balls per second anyways.

i recommend getting your son a mini or g4 as his first gun something cheap that doesn't break the bank if he ends up not liking paintball

Honestly, if you're asking about a spyder, then i'm going to assume you're looking for a cheaper setup. I wouldnt spend much either... hes 8, and i cant imagine hes going to be playing a ton at that age.... pick up a used Ion xe for cheap (you can get them for 80-150$ used here in the states) and it will be a great gun for him. better than any spyder. pair it with an egg 3 (evolution 3 hopper) which can be found cheap as well. (ebay is your friend in this situation since you are in south africa)

Thats just a recent one... they go for this price all day on ebay (that one even has an aftermarket barrel and trigger)...
Ions have semi-auto, 3 shot burst, rebound, full auto firing modes. When buying for a first time player thats under say 13-15... you really cant go wrong with an ion.
