I'm thinking I'll need some wireless wearable mic packs but beyond that I'm not sure. My starter budget for video is about $500 since I'm not using it as a primary income source. I should also mention I do have Premier Pro CS5, is this what I should be using for video editing?
don't know what BTS video means but premier is fine for editing unless you need some some more advanced stuff. Then you would need other softwares depending on what you are doing. ps I love my 5d II

edit: I'm assuming you mean behind the scenes... in that case premiere is fine. and if you are looking for some wireless lavs check out b&h

Yes BTS is what I meant, though I own a 24-70 L I do have access to a 24-105 L for IS stuff, so I don't need to worry about that. I'm wondering if there's anything having to do with focus tracking and such that I should be looking into as well.

follow focus's aren't 100% necessary but good to have if you have the money for them. Something like this would be nice to have http://jag35.com/products/followfocu...llowfocus.html

depending on if you're doing handheld shots or shots on a tripod. That one^ would be for a tripod but they sell rigs with follow focus rings built on them.

Right now I'm thinking most of it would be handheld just because I try to avoid tripods as much as possible, though I do have a CF manfrotto with a sirui ball head gathering dust in my car. This is my first time trying anything video outside of a $400 canon camcorder with a built in POS zeiss lens thing so it's going to be a learning experience, I feel like I did when I first picked up a camera. I really want to try out some of those panning tracks (not sure on the technical name?) and such as well, one big reason I decided to go for the 5D II over another 5Dc which would have suited my work just fine is because we have 0 dedicated videographers here and I really want some video content for my site, so instead of hiring someone I'm learning and doing it myself.

A few things.

Sennheiser G3's are the cheapest wireless Lav's you should look at if you care about sound quality. These are widely considered the best "entry level" wireless lavs.

You'll need something to record the sound with. The internal audio recorder on most DSLRs suck. Check out the Zoom h1 (Tascam DR100 if you need more channels).

A ball head tripod won't do much good for video. It'll work if you only want to keep the camera steady. Pans and Tilts don't work out so well. Start looking for a fluid head.

Premiere Pro CS5 is a great piece of software. Many pros use it. You don't need to look for other software unless you need special effects and such (this is where After Effects comes in).

If you want to build a shoulder rig, I'd suggest Jag35 (ProtoBaller1991 posted some links). They have good stuff and modest prices.

A follow focus isn't necessary, but is nice to have eventually. I'd put this on a lower priority than most other gear you need.

panning left/right
tilting up/down
dolly in/out
truck left/right

and idk about using a ball head for video.
and since you're used to photography. just make sure you watch your shutter speed and iso. try not to go past 800-1000 iso cause youll get a grainy picture.

that's another thing, I don't understand the concept of shutter speed for video at all, I'll need to do some research on that. Thanks for the heads up on ISO too, I figured the grain would be good up until about 3200 like it is on stills but that isn't the case?

This.

For video, try to stick by the 180* shutter rule. Shutter speed should be 2x the frame rate. 24fps should have a 1/48 shutter, but on the 5D you'll go to 1/50.

This isn't anything set in stone. This will just get you the amount of motion blur that people associate with film. Faster shutter speeds will make it look more like video/TV.

this lol

1/50 shutter will get you the closest to a film look. if you go up to like 1/2000 youll have a look from like saving private ryan when they are on the beach. just experiment and youll figure it out. and the audio from any dslr is worthless dont even record with it.

I don't even notice a difference between TV and film motion blur, time to change my way of looking at these things I guess.

If you experiment with your camera and with editing, you'll get it.

I already bought the Audio Technica ATR-3350. I'm gonna have to pick up an adapter to make it stereo instead of mono

Unless you need it for another reason, don't worry about the adapter. The microphone is a mono source. You can just pan it center and make it stereo in post production. It'll save you money and it takes like .5 seconds.

Its like $3 in cables and adapters, and I think I have enough stuff lying around to make my own. And It always seems to take longer for me to do that since I use Windows Movie Maker which doesn't separate the video and audio. I plan on upgrading sometime
