Hmm...
I'm a big fan of padded pants because they are typically designed to allow you to slide and won't ride up uncomfortably. The downside is that they're usually more expensive.
Slider shorts are cheaper, allow you to slide, but don't protect the lower portion of your legs, forcing you to buy another pair of pants, which will probably let you break even.
It's personal preference, but I prefer pants.

I have a pack of knee pads and slider shorts and elbow pads that he is selling for like 40 bucks that are about 1-3 cm too small for me so they should fit snuggly and not ride up. I am going to buy the light pants that most speedball players wear and put those over. Does this change anything or should i try to get something else

if your really worried about money you can just buy some volleyball kneepads and wear them under whatever pair of pants you decide to buy. thats what a lot of people end up doing.

I second this. I do this also with just plain BDU's. At $25 a pair. I can get 3-4 for the same cost as some fancy paintball pants. I also like the BDU's over the paintball pants cuz they are plain colors. Not so boom bang look at me.

No one in here knows what they are talking about.
Its not: "Pants OR slide shorts ". Its "pants AND slide shorts".
For knee pads I like the Franklin volleyball pads. For 6 bucks they have lasted a whole season. For slide shorts I wear Nike baseball ones. These work, but I would look at some football shorts as they have more padding. Go to a real sporting goods store and you can try both on. For groin protection I roll a pair of boot socks and stuff it in the cup pocket of the slide shorts. Mega padding and not uncomfortable like a hard cup. Ontop of all this o wear empire prevails that have their own knee hip and groin padding.
My cost look like this :
Franklin volleyball knee pads : $6
Nike pro combat baseball slide shorts : $35
Boot sock (cup) : $3??
Empire prevail pants: $85
So you have a good set of cleats?

Anyway, go with the knee pads and slider shorts because knee pads alone will do a lot more for you.

Then he shouldn't be "playing tournament ball " if he cant afford basic padding.

buy used pants, and get used/new pads, with new slider shorts. you want as much padding as possible, to avoid injury, and to possibly get more bounces.

just because hes not buying it all at once doesnt mean he isnt planning on it later down the road. if you cant understand that its his choice and his money to spend on whatever he does, you shouldnt be posting. this is the newbie section, we are here to help, not condemn.

Slider shorts are tight, to my knowledge, and would thus create more pain if hit with a paintball. Knee Pads sound good. And if you get pants, loose pants are the way to go.
