One thing and one thing only will ever make .50 more successful than .68 = PRICE TAG! You start selling 2000 for $15 there will be a revolution.

I had no idea they ever made mass production paintball markers outside of .68 cal other than those blow pipe paintballs for airsoft and such.

Bad idea i think to make 50 cal paint. why? waste of time and money.

Why dont we take back all the money "we" ("we" as in the paintball industry as a whole) wasted on 50 cal and why not use it to promote the sport.

I want to be watching deadliest catch on discovery channel and then see a planet eclipse or a dye commerical or two

yes i agree with that and take in for proof that back when we used circular and ball ammuntions for firearms they would tend to swerve off at a faster speed or longer distance. That is why we have our basic bullets today with groves and such and are accurate due to a key thing....Gyroscope they stay on track at a great distance and are reliable untill they either hit there target or ground. Circular balls tend to swerve off and such. That is charateristic with all paintballs. In this case i do not know if they will be more or less affected by this due to a lesser density in mass and would like to get stats on that

Really, there is no substitute for playing the game with 50 cal. paint. Spreadsheets are nice and all, but games played with 50 cal. paint are really the only way to tell whether its a good idea to convert or not.

I remember having a similar discussion in the early 90s! LOL!

Basically, because the rules at most fields and tournaments stipulate a velocity restriction but not an energy restriction. 68 CAL is superior in every way except perhaps paint capacity in a given hopper or pod size. 68 caliber is the same speed, just 36% greater diameter but 3 times heavier. This means that it slows down at a slower rate and retains more velocity and more punch to a further distance. It also makes a bigger "splat" meaning that hits are more conspicuous.

For 50 cal to make sense, fields and tournaments have to allow 50 caliber markers to be chrono-ed at a HIGHER velocity than 68 caliber. If 50 caliber markers are allowed to operate at 480 fps while 68 caliber ones are limited to 300 fps, you will have a parity in muzzle energy. 50 caliber will probably shoot flatter initially and allow for more paint. 68 caliber on the other hand is more likely to retain breaking energy further and make bigger splats.

Back then I actually favored 50 CAL at higher velocities as it will make paintball games less subject to a arching trajectory and more like a real fire fight with firearms. It think that overall it bias the game more towards accurate first shots than accurrate shooting than volume fire and walking the paint streak towards your opponent than it is today (and back then). I prefer that.

But in today's world of 280 or 300 fps chrono limits for all, you'll have to be crazy to use 50 CAL. Not to mention paint availability is a joke!
