Mask Fogging/Breathing Technique

I am Extremely sure that everyone, whether they have a thermal lens or not, has had issues with overheating and fog in their masks.

I offer a way to help with that, but it takes a bit of practice to do it all the time in a game when your adrenaline is pumping and you get into a firefight.

-Lots of people breathe out of their noses (effective at directing air away from your mask and face, but little air flow and difficult to catch breath)
-A better way to go is to open your mouth, place your lower lip over your bottom teeth and breathe normally. give it a try!

Doing this will more effectively move warmer air out of your mask, cooling you and preventing fog, you will also catch your breath faster.

Hope this tip helps you in future games and events!

I use Vforce Grill and Dye i4 and have had no problems with fogging or overheating regardless of how I breathe. But maybe this will help those who are experiencing problems

On the same boat, used flexs, grillz, I4s and Events, never a problem with fogging or overheating

I used to do this alot, then I got a nice mask and moved to a dry area. For people with cheap masks, or people in really humid areas this helps alot

moving helps, standing still and not moving makes fogging worse. A good mask will definately help tho. Thermal lens are good, and thermo-cured are good untill the anti-fog wears off.

There are times, it is not the mask but the glasses we wear that fog.

I still play with a JT Proflex that hasn't ever given me problems. A top end mask will go a long ways to preventing the problem.

Go for an E-flex you cannot go wrong.

They breathe really easy and never even try to fog.

I had E-vents before and never breathed as easy and they would fog from time to time.

Personally i play with an i4, i havent had issues fogging. but when it comes to catching your breath and cooling down it does help as well.

There was one instance where I was sitting in a tight knit forest/bushy area on a humid day where my old thermal mask fogged once. It was RAP4 Hawkeye, but that was the only time i have had a thermal lens fog. I am not saying that it will always happen, but it can.

Dry fields will be the best places that would avoid fogging, but where I live (North Vancouver, BC) i don't have the pleasure as it is generally higher humidity and I cannot escape it.

This says EVERYTHING! All thermal lens/masks are not created equal. Many companies claim to have thermal lenses that are still pieces of crap. Unfortunately you, at that time, had just such a mask.

actually, i had used it for 3 years and that was the only time that i had issue with fogging, if i had my i4 break i would hapily go back and use it. I was just illustrating that it can happen to a thermal lens given the proper conditions.

I wouldn't promote the hawkye over an i4, but it was extremely reliable for the time I use it. i also lend it to friends from time to time and they like it as well.

Thats fine but I ws just pointing out that it is a low quality mask. So its not surprising to hear that it fogged on you. You say you are in Vancouver and have to deal with a good deal of humidity but I'm sure you also benefit from lower seasonal temperatures then we do in the states. Figure weather like we often get in the summer, 90+ with high humidity. Sometimes in the 100s. Down here that mask would fog up QUICK.

JT Pro Flex, wore for 4 hours, super sweaty, breathing really hard, and i wear glasses and it didn't fog one bit, that was without fog doc too, but i put some on my glasses just in-case.

Dye I4's never seem to fog ever either, though they're harder to breath and talk out of.

Cheap masks make the game no fun. Never skimp on a mask, get a nice profiler, grills, i4, pro flex, events, e flex, whatever, high end masks are the best thing you could ever get. I would recommend i3's but lately my old pair have been fogging no matter what.

I'd definitely buy a new mask. When I was new to paintball in 2001 I used this technique, but it's just a better option to spend a bit more money on a good mask.

I know your pain. I'm a fatty and sweat a lot. No matter how much money you spend on a mask your sweat will accumulate on the foam causing moisture to enter your lenses and hence it fogs up. I learned the hard way this weekend at a all day scenario game. I thought my E-Vents would hold up since they cost roughly $100 and are dual pane. I suggest getting a sweat band, sandana, skull cap to keep moisture from your face to build up in your mask.

Not completely true. Many of the better masks out will resist fogging even under some of the most extreme conditions. I've put my i4 and Grill to the test in 100 degree heat with high humidity. Drenched the foam. In one instance almost caught heat stroke, literally, but lenses never fogged.

Of course at some point everything has its limit though. If your lenses are used or old enough eventually peel and fog. At the point it's time to replace them. But past that it's not all that unheard of to have a mask be fully fog resistant

Overheating yes, fogging no. A good thermal lens makes fogging pretty much an impossibility. Overheating is pretty hard to avoid short of using a mask with a lot of vents like the Proflex or Grills.

Fog doc is your friend. It's $7 for a small thing of it, get some and try it out. To test Fog Doc, i put some on my glasses and went in my hot tub for a good 30 minutes and they didnt fog at all but eventually water was just beading off of them, so it seems to work great. But last weekend when we played i lent on of my i3 pro's (10 years old, old lense too) to my cousin, he had fogging problems all day, even after he used the fog doc, so who knows. With every mask iv'e ever used it has fogged EVENTUALLY like 4+ hours, and if the mask wasnt fogging my glasses were. But with my new Pro Flex's not even a hint of fog and they were drenched in sweat and i wore them from noon to about 7pm. Not to mention they're Extremely comfortable and i have the yellow lense so its like cheating on my woodsball course muhaha
