Condensing DVD collection

Trying to get a new computer built as fast as possible, and when I do the top priority is getting all of the movies I own onto harddrives so I no longer have all of these cases cluttering up my home (plus I'd like to go ahead and sell most of them and try to get some money back).

The problem with that is I have something around 600 DVDs. If I do a straight rip, that's going to be an incredible amount of space it will take up, not to mention an ungodly amount of time and even more effort to go back through and convert them all afterwards.

I'm looking for a way to streamline the process. Obviously I'll still have to rip each individually, but I want something that is going to pull video and audio data and throw it into a ~1gb .AVI file with decent quality, all in one fell swoop.

How should I go about doing this in the easiest possible manner?

Handbrake? That's what I use, it's still going to take a while, but shouldn't be too bad with a new computer.

Well if you're ripping them and then selling them you will not be possessing a legal copy. This is against the rules.

Does handbrake rip straight to a converted file? I thought it still pulled the full DVD worth of data THEN converted. Or does it delete the original .vbo/.ifo data after?

I realize it's going to take awhile, but I'd like to do it without wasting a rape-ton of hard drive space in the process.

DVD's and physical mediums in general are ****ing obsolete, as is that absolutely ridiculous concept of intellectual property perpetuated by media giants who have their jimmies in a rustle because they can't hold a conglomerate on a dying distribution source. I'm lucky to get $1 for each one. Stop being a ****-for-brains ****.
Really, dude?

You're 100% right. However, the current law is still requires you to own the physical media to be legal.

So what if I just throw it away and not sell it? Does it still make it illegal to own the digital copy?

If so, that may be the single most retarded thing I have ever heard in my life.

It's amazing the lengths media corporations will go through to hinder the usage by honest consumers without slowing down the real criminals in the absolute slightest.

Throwing them away should be legal. After all you're just retaining and using the backup of the content you held previously.

Selling them would mean there is a paper trail that will put you into a huge bind if you go under scrutiny.

Personally, if I were do what you're asking, I would box up all the media and stuff it in the corner of the attic, basement, or garage to get it out of the way. You're covered if something happens, and if they get destroyed along the way you're still safe.

Essentially the 1 DVD would be made into 2 usable copies, and each would be possessed by by a different owner. In theory that's 1 DVD they could have sold, but didn't. I realize that its sort of the same thing when you buy a used movie, but regardless the law is the law. I understand your frustration but if you get caught "copying" and selling 600 DVDs,only Saul Goodman may help you.

Except Lionel Hutz aka Miguel Sanchez is legitimately incompetent.

Just take the DVDs out of the cases, keep the discs and throw the cases away, that'll save space

It's no different than going to the video rental, renting a movie, ripping it at home, and returning it while keeping the ripped copy. It's not legal to do. Your meta talk on the usefulness of physical mediums is irrelevant.

Put all the DVDs in a DVD/CD binder and do what you want with the cases & labels. If you discard all of your DVDs you do not own them just as I do not own the milk cartons in the landfill I have discarded. Good to see you're capable of such grandiose thought.
