Run every day.
None of that walking ****. It won't get you anywhere.
Start at 20-30 minutes a day.
Do that for 2 weeks. Then increase by about 10 minutes a day, or whatever is comfortable for you.

The only way you will truly get better with running, is by running. Everything else is supplementary, but if you are just starting out, you have to run every day.
Maybe take one day off each week.
Don't do any interval stuff or workouts for a while, you aren't in good enough shape to truly get anything out of it that you will be able to sustain.

Easy answer, or hard for some because they hate running, is that you have to run every day.

I started running about 2 miles a day 5 days a week, running and walking mixed
Then bumped the distance up to 2.5 at week 3, then 3 miles at week 4, running the entire distance.

Start at level that you are comfortable with them gradually add length to that.

I run about 20 miles a week skipping every other day so I'm not pro runner by any means, but this is what plan I used and it worked for me, it may take you longer to build up our stamina depending on your weight and how much actual effort/drive you put into it.

As long as I can remember I've been told that I'm an underpronator. I have a tendancy to land on the outside of my foot and, if I'm not careful, roll my ankle. I've also been told that because of this, cushioned shoes are the best shoes for me. I've also been told to stay away from the stability/control shoes.

Is this accurate? If so, what running shoes should I be looking in to buying? My current pair are quite worn ...

I underpronate as well, the key is finding a neutral shoe

Some shoes are made to help people that over pronate(most of the population) so getting these shoes will not help you.

If your on your feet all day in a pair of cushiony shoes then you should opt for a shoe that has some support.

But if you really want to find a true running shoe store and have them figure out how much you underpronate and see what shoes they think will fit your needs the best

I know absolute jack **** about the technical side of running. However I have had this problem since I can remember on my left foot. I've messed up my left ankle horribly from just walking around and rolling the damn thing. As far as shoes, I've been running with a pair of the minimus zeros for a couple of weeks and I've never felt better running. My calves felt like they were going to explode for the first week or so, but they feel pretty back to normal now. Looking at my other shoes I always wear down the outside rear portion of my shoes and I think it put my ankle at an angle that made it more prone to rolling. The more barefoot feel of the minimus really makes me feel much more comfortable.

OK. A little background and then I'll get to my actual question. During high school was a 3 varsity letter winner 3 years. Graduated at 5'10" 220 pounds. So I wasn't huge but definitely not small. The year following high school I sprung up to around 6'2" and about 250 pounds. After adopting some nasty habits such as smoking cigs and drinking lots o beers I got up to around 340lbs. After 6 years of nasty smoking and heavy binge drinking I can say I'm finally making some progress. Still drink on occasion which I don't seem to think is a problem. Just recently quit smoking. 22 days and counting. Having no problem with it. Right now I'm back down to around 280 pounds hoping to get back down to 220 again. Second day of not smoking I went for a run. Did a mile in about 11 minutes and about passed out. Since then I've been doing super hilly routes anywhere from 1.5 to 2 miles in about 15-25 minutes. I know it's not fast or anything to be proud of but I really want to run a 5k and make a decent time at it too. Kind of like showing people you can quit smoking and lose weight and change your life kind of thing. So any workout regiments or tips any of you guys could give me would be great. Thanks.

run as much as you possibly can

If you are confident you can run the 1.5-2 miles without issue then start adding .25-.5 miles(or more) until you hit 5K then run that distance until it becomes easier then keep adding.

Its all about adding distance in manageable increments so you get used to it

YOU ACTUALLY HAVE TO PUSH YOURSELF TO RUN LONGER even after you hit your target distance!!

Seems like you have made some good progress so far.

Also, how would something like a keto diet affect me trying to get back into shape and running?

Best running shoes for under 100$? I'm broke as a joke right now and my running shoes are way past their mileage. Have always used Asics gels but maybe looking to try something different.

I wear reebok's running shoes. It's their version of freeruns. The ones I have aren't the zig zag ones though, sorry I don't remember the name of them but I got them for around $40.

Not necessarily true. Most companies are adding "features" to try and justify the higher price. Most of these actually lead to creating a heavier, more complicated shoe that doesn't necessarily lead to a better performing shoe.

To the original inquiry about a good shoe under $100 - Since you like Asics, look at the Gel-Equation 6.

Another trick to get cheaper shoes - get the previous season's model. Its the best part of online retailers loading up on shoes. Changes from one year to the next are always minimal, and not always actual improvements.

Or the asics 1170 good mild motion control and built to last... usually sell for 70 range.. if you are doing less than 15-20 miles a week you can get Nikes, something like the Dual fusion is fine. Personally I love Nike's for short mileage training, just don't expect them to last too long.

But to adapt your feet and improve your gait I use minimalist shoes for runs 5 miles and less, but it took me a lil while to build to that level.

Most $100 sneakers are a rip off. I didn't see any shocks or air bubbles on any of the shoes in the Olympics.
