I hated playing doom 3 for those reasons. It wasn't scary, just constant low light, hearing whispers, etc an you just waited for the goes to jump out and scare the **** out of you.

protip: don't play the dead space games and DEFINITELY do not play amnesia. amnesia is like the scurriest **** ever and dead space makes doom look like hello kitty island adventure

Man, I tend to avoid being in the room with Amnesia. Then again, the last time someone was playing it, it was a group of my friends, in the dark, with the most excitable one being forced to play. Probably would have been hilarious to watch.
Edit: now that Metro 2033 is actually on sale, anyone own it? Looks good, but I usually wait for a recommendation on stuff like that, and the guy I usually go to for that hasn't played it yet. My standard metric is "if England has played it for more than an hour, it's probably worth buying." He has 324 games.
