It's OK, I flexed $70 above my monthly goal to try to get a GTI, and his bottom dollar I got down $50/month from his original offer. But it was still $5 more a month than my top dollar. Out of principle and after putting my final offer on the table, I really just couldn't budge. I literally brought $2K cash to put down on it that day, but they said no so I know they were also at their bottom dollar.
So I got (leased) a '12 Mazda 3. Not the manliest of cars, but the 6 speed manual 2.5, and it's actually kinda fun. Really good chassis and fun suspension. Good gearing too.
I'm hoping with my job now I can cut this lease early soon and try some new cars. A Golf R is definitely on my list. I like me some VW and AWD!

Much better choice over the gti. Enjoy it.

S4 would probably be the most "livable" DD out of all of these. And they can make good power with some mods. But then, most of the other cars can as well. Stage 3 S4 = POWAHHHHH
15k could get you a really nice one.

They shouldn't be too bad or frequent with a B5 S4, really. There are definitely worse cars out there.

B5 is definetly better than the B6. At 15k you'd be buying a really nice B5. At 15k you'd be buying a really **** B6.

Supposedly Stage 3 S4's are more reliable than stock too. They're gonna be really expensive to repair though.

Well most people who do stage 3 mods to their cars eliminate/upgrade some of the common failure points of the cars stock. But running more boost brings more problems.

I saw a 2003 with 550 to the wheels for sale for 22 the other day. Could probably find a 2003 for like 13-15 in decent shape. New ones are 40 fully loaded, so anywhere in there.

A decent Evo 8 would be around 15k. I wouldn't trust the 13k ones, but there have been some sold. You could probably find a clean 8 for 15k though. Or find a bunch asking 16k, offer them 15k, and if they decline, give them your number and at least one will probably call you a week or two later if they don't get any other close offers.

You could definitely get a G35 for 15k. I see them going for 11-13 pretty frequently near me, assuming you mean coupes. I have no idea about the sedans. To make it much faster than stock would cost a LOT of money though being that it's N/A from the factory. With the other cars you can pretty much just slap a bigger turbo on it with mostly stock piping and make a ton more power. I don't know what you're looking for in a DD though really. You've got plenty of options in that price range, test drive a couple of them and see which you like best.

Cars in general are going to be expensive, and I've accepted that.
I can't seem to find a "solid 8" anywhere. Where should I look?
Also, for an evo/g35, how many miles is too many?

Depends. As with anything, the owner matters more than the miles. I'd say expect prices to drop past 120/130k miles. That's where I'd begin to get iffy.

If you can't get one for around 50k miles I'd go for around 100k. That way all the major matinence has been taken care of (clutch, timing, etc)

Don't know anywhere to look for Gs as I've never really been into them.
But check evolutionm for evos, there's a pretty good sized classified section on that forum.
Find out the major maintenance that needs to be done like the guy above me said and make sure they were done.
I'd rather buy a car with 65k on it that just had it's 60k done than buy a car with 55k knowing I have to do the 60k soon. But you can usually tell by mods whether or not someone really beat on the car. If not, you can for sure tell in person. Get a car that was driven conservatively for 70-80k miles if you can, IMO. Should be relatively easy to find and you've got a bit to go before the next major maintenance interval hits you.

If you're looking for a superior driving experience and straight line distance isn't what matters, also check out an S2000 and Miata MX5. They drive like go karts, they really are that much fun.
I'd also have to assume the Fiat 500 Arbath might be a lot of fun. It's just a turbo charged 500, and that car is so real agile. Just a guess though.
