A majority of tablet buyers don't know what they want and don't necessarily give a crap about whether the thing runs Android, ios, or windows. It just has to be stylish and be at least sort of useful, which the "surface" appears to be.

Windows 7 tablets are more expensive because they have to run x86 hardware. This brings with it certain limitations (battery life, weight) but certain advantages (Windows 7 is infinitely more useful than any mobile OS.) They are not advertised heavily because they lean too far towards the "practical" end of the style spectrum.

If the surface can run real windows type programs, it becomes infinitely more valuable than any tablet on the market. It becomes almost as valuable as a laptop.

Windows has absolutely no value to me but I really like the way this is looking. It's probably too late for this to be a real game changer but I'll reserve my judgement for when I can actually use one. I'm not sure when I'd use this over an ultra portable notebook or regular tablet.

What happened to the Surface that was supposed to a big *** table?

They probably finally realized it had the marketing appeal rating of 0 and was an absolute waste of investment to develop a table that looks cool when you touch it. It might have sold a couple hundred units for an outrageous price. It's entirely impractical and have you ever tried leaning over to navigate on a surface parallel to the ground for extended period of time? Even after 15 minute, you get a sore back.

This new tablet looks pretty appealing to me. If it has a full-fledged Windows 8, I doubt I'll even as much as look at another tablet. Pretty excited to see the full specs.

Maybe that's what's in the Microsoft store at Tysons Mall in Mclean, VA. It looks pretty cool and people asked about buying them. But apparently it's rather expensive (like 15k).

It's slated to run Windows 8 on the Ivy Bridge version and Windows 8 RT on the ARM version.

Which is exactly what M$ is trying to do. Converging a tablet OS with the full on productivity suite of a PC creates the synergy needed to open up a whole new market. Netbooks and lower spec'd laptops could be completely replaced by this new form factor.

People still think they're being clever when they use a $ instead of an S? How about referring to Apple as AppŁ€?

Jokes.

Sorry for using an acronym that I've been used to using for a while. I did not see myself as being in any way clever.

Jeezus.

So, I'm really starting to see the appeal of this thing.

Any word on battery life?

I know this is probably not going to happen, but is there any way this could be used to hook up to a projector or external monitor?

Specs say yes, either Micro HD Video (whatever the hell that is) on the RT version, or Mini DisplayPort on the W8Pro version. Hopefully they just mean Mini-HDMI for the RT version, having to buy yet another adapter would be a pain in the ***.

Most excellent. I wonder how much battery life it will have.

Microsoft even had a special version of XP for their first tablet release. That's a whole hell of a lot more ambitious than simply stretching out an ipod touch.

Yup. I used a Toshiba M200 with XP Tablet through college and it was significantly more useful than the iPad. The stylus was much better than the touch screen things they have now.

How are you supposed to use the tablet in bed, or anywhere away from a table?
Will it also have a virtual keyboard?

It runs windows 8, of course it will have a virtual keyboard. Also with win8 there are many options for that.

Microsoft is making this tablet to basically be a computer. Thats cool and i'm sure it will work really well for the people who need a portable computer on the go.

However...

When you look at an iPad vs a Macbook they are completely different. The IOS is an app based OS. The pilot of the iPad is that "Theres an app for everything" as opposed to a normal computer os where you have files and programs and what not.

Im not to familiar with MS8 but if Microsoft makes this tablet a true tablet PC, as in a not app based operating service which is what Im assuming it is, and priced at say $500 I don't see it being successful.

The vast majority of iPad users are not graphic designers and business men. They are college kids looking for a quick laptop replacement who are not doing any intensive work and they are for parents/grandmas to check their emails and facebooks. Granted more and more people are starting to use the iPad for more intensive reasons but the majority of the users use it for the games and facebook.

Microsoft needs to figure out its target base. With consumer goods like this it's not always about shoving the best hardware possible. Sure the specs will buy the tech community but that is such a small portion of the total marketplace.

Apple doesn't advertise its specs. Do you think mom cares about how much ram and processing power is in her iPad? No. All she cares about is that its easy enough for her to check her email and to skype her kids.
