Why?

Why do people put "it is a 2k11" "a 2k12" or something of the like?
You are not saving any typing by putting a 'k' instead of a '0'. I have been on a "language fit" recently, as it seems we as a whole are losing our capacity to communicate properly. Proper usage of language is a critical aspect of a society, yet correct punctuation, spelling, and grammar have been on a strong and steady decline.

This thread is completely OT, but I digress.

While I DO agree that people are getting lazy and don't even TRY to use proper grammar, for the most part, I do have to point out that language as a whole is evolving, and changing.

There are words in current dictionaries that were not there, 50, 30 15 or even 10 years ago. Part of this change is due to technological advancements that create new terms and descriptions that need to be added to the language, and the other part comes from using this technology, we as a people get lazy and learn how to short form everything, but still leave enough information so that the receiver of the information will still understand the message.

I've given up trying to get people to use proper grammar and spelling, so I do use it when I reply, or send messages, usually. There are times I will use short forms, and abbreviations, because the need for full proper grammar isn't there.

Bling is in the dictionary. So are many of the acronyms that we use in texting.

It has just become common practice. I would also like to point out that "k" when referring to numbers refers to 1000. So essentially typing "2k11" is not really incorrect. Granted, it is not as formal, proper, or quicker then typing "2011", but you can blame this on everyone trying to be AGG on the interwebz.

Just suck it up. You know what it means, they know what it means. It has become a part of our culture and language. These are the stepping stones of our society to turn the movie "Idiocracy" into a reality.

It goes back to the turn of the century when the media was dealing with issues surrounding software and it was dubbed the Y2K problem. That terminology in the contemporary lexicon seeped over into conversational english including marketing. So in paintball, especially with Intimidators, you had a 2002 Intimidator. Going back 10 years on this site you'll see people even then refer to it as the 2K2 Intimidator. That was it's name. The 2K2 Intimidator. You also had a 2K5 Intimidator. If you go to BLAST's site now, the link to the manual is the 2K2 Intimidator.

Carrying that forward the 2K + n designation has been used with major changes in a platform. 2K5ing refers to putting Alias generation parts on the older markers. Specifically the gripframe and electronics. This designation has a well established history with this marker platform. Subsequently the variations in the G6R versions have frequently been noted the same...2K11 and 2K12 to differentiate between LED Frames and OLED frames (and other components).

Is it lazy to type this, yes...probably it is. It certainly doesn't take more work to type out 2011 or 2012 or 2005. But in this case it denotes more than just a year but the 2K12 designation starts to become associated with something specific about the brand. PE's markers have the 05 ego. The 09 Ego. It's just as easy to type it out but when I hear someone say "Is that an Oh-Eight..." they don't have to finish before I realize they're probably talking about an Ego.

Anyways....it's all part of the lexicon and association with the brand.

Does it actually stem from Y2K?

I was always under the impression that using "k" was just an abbreviated form of "kilo-", the metric prefix for 1000.

The usage in vernacular spun off from the Year 2000 i.e. Y2K. We saw a lot of stuff at work labeled 2K1 and then 2K2 after the turn of the century. Paintball was no different.

It is...

I've been using "K" for 1000 for longer than would have been affected by the year 2K.

Its because you are programed to be a stupid debt slave from birth. Since the system is not absolute as of yet, there are different forms and "levels" of how it effects people.

OLD FEEDBACK!

Why do people do this wanna-be hk thing? I mean hk people dont even play paintball, they just whine and start drama while wearing the ugliest stuff. Seriously you find light blue and pink to be attractive colors for your parents 1500 dollar investment (your gun/marker)? If you want to whine keep it off the field and save it for the internet; O wait! THATS EXACTLY WHAT YOU DO! Haha, if you don't play then don't whine.

I want your G6r parts and upgrades, sell them to me, because you wont get anything for them if you sell/trade them with the gun.
