Lucky Spitfire 4.0 Predicament. Need some quick help!

Sorry to have a brash title, but this is something I need a solution to rather fast.

I've sold a Lucky 4.0 board and I've just got wind that apparently the LED at the top of the board isn't there (I didn't know, I just moved it as said BNIB from one hand to the next).

Anywho, what LEDs could be used to re-solder onto the board where the original was supposed to be, and what kind of precautionary steps should be taken to remove the old prongs (unless I can solder directly onto them) and to install the new (and appropriate) LED?

Depends on what type of led was on there before... but most should work. they are directional though, so just hold it on there with some tweezers and if it doesnt light up, flip it.

as for the prongs, if you can, use a de-soldering gun, or some of the solder webbing to soak up the old solder first. remember your working on a circuit board, so a fine tip and limited heat is best. also, heat the prongs, and not the board when your putting it back on.

ohwait, would you know, perhaps, what the diode size is?

3mm? 5mm?

if it's like the lucky for the ion, just make sure you get the multi colored one, and if you go to radio shack and just look at the sizing, you can decide on the size based on the spacing of the prongs.

I had to re-solder mine bec/ one of the copper traces got torn off the board; i was able to use a jumper after poking around with a piece of wire.

If its easier for you to solder a pigtail to the LED then solder that to the board, you can, but put heat-shrink on it so it doesnt contact anything and give it enough flex (thats all obvious i guess)

If you want to remove the old prongs, desolder them carefully by pulling them out by the long end while applying heat to the back, but dont leave the heat on toooo long or it can fry other components on the board.

What would you consider to be "too long"?

1. more than a few seconds; and let it cool before you heat it up again
2. it's probably easier to get a bit of desoldering braid to remove the solder
3. if you're not sure what you're doing, it's easy to screw up. At the very least, watch some videos on youtube. Even better, find some junk circuit board to practice on or someone to show you.

Oh, I wouldn't be doing it, but the person who is can. We just don't want to be misinformed on what to do and trash a perfectly (other than the LED) good board.
