Though he could probably stand to lose a few pounds, since he goes on and on in his Q & A about health markers, I'm sure he's got a clean bill of health. He just couldn't give less of a damn about how people think he should look.

why are you sure he has a clean bill of health when waist circumference is the most reliable indicator of insulin resistance. Not to hate on rip but he's not a special snowflake who gets to be fat without consequences.

Hsil: I just think it's ironic that Rippetoe spends all day preaching athletic knowledge yet looks that way.

Yeah but he doesn't even look like he lifts.
How you look directly influences your credibility in this industry. Why do you think it's so easy for Layne to sell **** and make money? Because he looks insane.
No one wants to buy supplements or listen to advice from someone who doesn't reflect the image that the consumer is trying to attain. That's why all of these supplement ads have 230 pound 6% bf monsters on the label.

I should have said "relatively". I'm sure his cholesterol, blood pressure, vo2 max etc are all within the healthy range. I don't know for sure, obviously, but he goes on a lot about these things on his board. I said he could stand to lose a few pounds, but someone who works as hard exercise wise as Rip is probably in no great danger of dying from complications from type II diabetes like his waistline might indicate. The sample pool of people who are overweight and regularly engage in vigorous exercise is pretty damn small, so unless you can provide a study that samples them, I think conclusions about his overall health based solely on his waistline are erroneous.
However, again, he should probably lose a few pounds.
Ari:
I disagree with your assessment. Given your premises/conclusion, how do you explain his rampant popularity? And his almost universal credibility, in his specialty of training novice strength athletes?

I think his popularity is rampant in the powerlifting community but not so much people that are geared towards gaining size over strength (not saying the two are independent. Not to mention I see threads regularly online of people who drank a gallon of milk, did a low volume, low calorie burning routine like SS, and come out at a higher BF, with thicker thighs, a tire around their waist, and pencil thin arms.
Maybe I'm just biased against what I presume is an elitist "Squat, Bench, Dead, nothing else or you're a *****" attitude that is prescribed in a lot of these online videos and articles from guys at big powerlifting gyms.
I never started on a routine like SS, and I think I'm doing alright.

Would Rippetoe be much more popular and respected if his body was in better shape? Yes.

I see what you're saying, makes sense. Definitely not the only thing out there, and his diet advice is pretty jacked for a lot of people.
Pump:
Obviously he would be taken more seriously in some circles, but that assumes he wants to be/cares. I don't think he cares. I see your point though.
sorry, I can't multiquote at work for some reason lol
also, I really dgaf about rippetoe or what people think about him. I kind of wish I never said anything.

In B4 angus rages, even though he falls in the stereotype.
No offense, you do have strong lifts.

I wouldn't recommend Pre for dips. I brought it up with Lurker a ways back and he agreed there was too much risk for injury/the Pre is unnecessary for a group that small.
