It is really uncomplicated. Generally your school will have veterans counselors and financial aid office people who can tell you exactly what you are going to get. All you have to do is apply to the VA for education benefits, complete the online FAFSA, and register for courses.
Just be prepared to initially pay out of pocket for some expenses, since the nature of VA money is to pay you after the fact.

But, when I get out next June, and classes won't start until fall I could collect un-employment until my post 9/11 allowance kicks in..correct? So, like 3-4 months max of un-employment.

The problem you run into, is that the state will see school as a hindrance when applying for jobs. School will theoretically take away from your job offers because your school will be more important. The whole point of unemployment is to be proactive in looking and trying to get a job, so you have to either A)Not tell them you're going to school, which is a question on the form I'm sure, B)Be crafty, tell them its online, etc. You can photoshop your class schedule to reflect that.

Check to see if your state allows a grace period if you are getting VA benefits. My state allowed up to 120 days without having to pay while waiting for my GI bill to kick in. The sooner you set school up, like 6 months out, the less troublesome it is. The stories you here about ppl not getting paid right when they start school, are the ones who slacked the **** off.

Well either way you're going to have rent to pay, and you have to eat. But yea my school will let you slide on tuition while the GI bill is pending.
With the way the new gi bill is being paid now though, it doesn't matter when you put in for benefits... the school can only certify after the add/drop period and it still takes the VA a ridiculous amount of time to pay the schools.

But you still have to get your VA certificate of eligibility, which takes time. You can at least get your book stipend too.

I've noticed the VA is actually pretty fast at certifying eligibility. That would only really be a problem for someone just starting school, too.
My recommendation to vets recently has been to cover expenses with a fed student loan until the VA money arrives, then pay back the loan before any interest gets charged.

Another question. Since my state of residence is Washington, my Orders put me in Maryland. Lets say I wanted to go to school in...New York when I get out...Since I'm a vet do I automatically get in state tuition rates or must I become a resident and wait a year?

Well, I am going to school and collecting unemployment and they know this. Even when I went through TAP&TEMP they said it would not be a problem.

This is just me dealing with TN though, I have no idea how it would work in other states, but I can't imagine it being much more different.

You don't automatically become a resident of a state by being a veteran. They will pay up to the resident rates for tuition+fees for an out of state school. But you might be ok if your school participates in the YRP (i.e. schools that voluntarily contribute funds to make up the difference). This would take some research on your part. This is also a good reason to get in contact early with Veteran's office reps at your target schools. They know best how VA and state programs apply to them specifically.

Note this is ONLY for %100 eligibles

I had to jump through hoops in AZ to get it.

I found those group deals rather awkward.

eh there's areas where we don't breach (ie exactly what we've done)
it's more of a way for us all to vent
basically we all hate civvies
the guy that organizes this, is a sgt i've known from years ago. knows all the good people in the area to deal with when it comes to veterans affairs. so he's going to help set me up with the right people for my back and knee once i get a family doctor to refer me to there offically.

Well, I get 10% for my degenerative arthritis in my shoulder, your back may be 30% or so, just shooting from the hip, which will be about 600$ /mo

I got 10 for my shoulder and 30 for my back. But it doesn't mean you get 40% you could get 30%

Yea, I get 10% for my other shoulder too, which should put me at 50% with my other stuff, but I'm still rated 40%.

Any have any tips for filing appeals? I have q letter from my neurologist for the headaches, and the meds... so I'm going to be sending that up as evidence of "prostrating headaches" to bump that 0% up some. Hopefully.
