In New Zealand we have recently had a law change regarding paintball markers now allowing markers with automatic (auto, ramping, burst) modes into the country. But with it being very new customs still may have issues with it.
Worst thing that happens is that it gets wrongly destroyed by customs in NZ and he has a winge about it all. Not your problem really.
