Model 98 Upgrades (specifically the ACT)

Ok, so I wanted to make a nice Model 98 into a sleeper-ish gun. But that doesn't mean I want it to shoot fast. I just want a gun that doesn't have any problems (free from breaking paint, good consistency, no trouble shooting 280-290 fps) but looks like a regular Model 98 (you know, like a rental).

So I got a 98 from a friend of mine. And I was going to put ACT into it, by purchasing this upgrade:

http://www.tippmannparts.com/Tippman...3.htm?CartID=2

But I've heard people say that the older 98's (even the 98 customs) can't accept the ACT upgrade. Is this true? If so I'll just save my money.

Would this part be the reason that it doesn't work??? Like you just need a new back cap or is the gun's receiver what stops the installation of the ACT upgraded?
http://www.tippmannparts.com/JCS-Bla...2.htm?CartID=7

Also, I wanted to get a Techt Zero Kick Hammer (I know it doesn't eliminate all kick, but a little less kick would be nice). I need to know if the ACT upgrade will work before I buy a Techt ZKH so I pick up the right one.

Thanks for any help and CORRECT answers.

Model 98 or 98 Custom?

Either way, it wont work. The bodies have different milling on the inside. So, no, it wont work. Unless your 98 Custom is a Platinum Series.

The TechT ZKH is a pain to install if I remember correctly. Lots of tuning.

It's a Model 98. So I guess I can cancel that upgrade lol.

I don't mind the tuning, I'm pretty familiar with tuning blowbacks. Seems like for some it's a drop in upgrade, for others it's a pain in the *** and they have to re-spring their guns. But, is the end result good?

It decreases it slightly but all Tippmanns have kick.

ACT upgrade: No
ZKH: Yes

I have no experience with either, so I can't give you any information there.

Personally, I'd get the R/T, ZKH, upgraded internals, and a barrel kit. It would look fairly simply, but would lay some paint on the field.

Yes, but if it goes from kicking like a blowback to the kick of a high-end marker then it's worth it to me.

Not sure if you guys can tell, but I'm a pump player. I don't mind shooting slow, and I have no problem suppressing someone with 6-7 bps, especially in rec ball.

Gonna get an Apex 2 so I can shoot under the tree line, which should be fun if I need to use it.

The upgrades for this gun are gonna look like this:

-APP Rubber Fore grip
-Hogue Palm Swell Panels
-Apex2 Barrel
-Techt Zero Kick Hammer
-Polished Internals
-Rear Velocity Adjuster

Heck ya dude! It has already worked since '98, or when did they stop making the model 98?

I wonder if that Apex will give your "rental" away...
I was thinking of doing something similar, but I'm just fine playing stock class and owning faces. Keep doing what you're doing!

As for recoil, I don't really mind my A5's recoil. 6-7bps is just fine for me, usually I'm shooting 3-4 bps for suppression, less if I'm moving or trying to hold a position. Stock class it's about one bps or so, most of the time I'm only firing one or two shots while I move. Other than that, I don't really shoot a lot. Good luck on the build! You'll have to post pics when you get her done!

My experience, is that the RT won't work well with the ZKH. Best I was able to get at a good BPS were 3 shot bursts. Sustained rate of fire was slower than manual fire. That said, if anyone knows how to get the RT to work correctly with the ZKH, please tell me! lol I'm hoping the shop will let me return it towards an Egrip, but just in case they don't I'll give the RT another shot if anyone has any tips.

The ZKH won't get your gun kicking less than the real high end guns like an Ego or the Bob Longs, but my A5 does kick less than my friends Etha and is significantly less than my bro-in-law's 98 with the stock bolt. I didn't have to bad of a tuning problem with it, but I did have to replace the valve spring with Techt's low weight spring, which I'm sure isn't helping my RT situation, but I'll take the ZKH over the RT any day.

Well, I'll just tell them it's a "rain cover" hahaha

My field doesn't really rent too many 98's. They use Piranhas as rentals, but we have 2 Tippmann 98's haha.

We got play Living Legends every year, and sometimes we even go up there to practice a national layout. When we do that, we sometimes hop on the rec-ball field and get a few games in. I'm pretty sure CPX rents out Apex 2 barrels as an upgrade with the Tippmann 98 rental.

I'll try the Techt Hammer, and I'll be sure to buy it from Techt. If it doesn't work like I want it to, I've got 30 days to return it.

They never did. It evolved into the 98 Custom. Body halves changed inside to allow for Response Trigger/ E-Trigger and outside the ribs were removed, buttcap changed a tiny bit, changed sear and trigger design and the trigger guard was made removable.

They currently don't sell a 'MODEL 98' is what I mean. I know it's kinda the same model, but it has a lot of advancements in terms of a what it was and now is.
