Echo1, Dboys (Only their AKs), G&G, and if you have the money just get a KWA aeg. Then again KWA is going to release their sportline series which are the same exact amazing guns out now, but with plastic bodies, and at $180. That's what I'd recommend for an AEG.
For pistols, as a starter, I'd recommend either a KJW (inexpensive, works great) or a KWA (little more money, works perfect). The KJW will shoot about 320fps and the KWA pistols will shoot about 360fps.

JG or Echo 1 are the best bang for your buck if your looking for affordable and reliable. in addition to those 2 brands, check out the ICS sportline or G&G Sportline guns, they both have good internals with a cheaper plastic body to keep the cost down, i myself am using an ICS sportline m4 and it works flawlessly. as far as pistols go, are you looking for a gas electric or spring? I would avoid Electric unless you want to drop some decent money. There are some nice gas non blowback handguns made by KWC, HFC, UHC and WE, all running between $40 and $100, but they will not preform so well in the cold. you could also sacrifice the semi auto capabilities and some performance and just pick up a cheap spring pistol snce mostly you will be using your AEG.

its the most common gearbox type, used in M4/M16 varients. theres 8 gearbox types, plus a few obscure types only found in a gun or 2. Version 2 is just the most common.

Like Nubbycake said, it's the most common gearbox. If you want to learn more about different versions and stuff like that check out MechBox.com. It's full of videos, pictures and animations of all the different gearboxes out there.

KWA doesn't make an AK yet. They just announced it at IWA but it's not released.

Newer CYMA AKs and m14s are surprisingly nice.

Only a couple of the Cyma AKs are good, instead I'd suggest a Dboys AK. They're copies of VFC and most are real steel and wood construction. And they're only about $120 new.

I suppose it largely depends on which run you get.
I've owned two of the lower end ones, and found that the shot pretty out of the box, and even better after a simple tune up.
