-Buy a cheap broken canon point and shoot ($5). Then send it in. I know of sites like POTN they regularly have people selling them. That's what my friend did.

Making the switch from Nikon to Canon. As far as DSLR's with HD video capability, is the 60D worth it or is there something better in its price range?

Also, does anyone know of an online retailer that does layaway or some sort of payment program?

Thanks.

Has anyone figured out how to tether to an iPad to check focus/exposure? I've heard eyefi is too slow/unreliable.

there might be a way with one of the wifi adaptors, but I couldn't tell you for sure. I know i looked into it a bit a while back and there are work arounds but they all were overly complicated and not really what i wanted

Current set up:

Rebel XTi, 50mm f1.8, Tamron 17-50 f2.8

I shoot lots of stuff between 17-50 but have decided I want at least 100mm, maybe more. I also want a new body.

Options:

100mm f2.8 macro L IS and T3i
7D only
70-200 f2.8L (non IS)

I will obviously use them all. I think the 100 or 70-200 will get me the reach I am looking for and give a little longer use out of hte XTi. It mostly suffers for me I feel in low light. I do however shoot more outside so the low light might not matter as much. The 100mm also gives me $ for a flash.

I will have all of them shortly, just need to figure out the order. Once I get each one I will spend time learning the new item.

if it were me it would be in this order:

70-200

7d

flash

unless you specifically want the macro capabilities of the 100, I would rather have the 70-200. It is a great lens. Depending on what you are specifically shooting, you could probably get by with the f4 version and save 500$. I have the 2.8 version and very rarely is it crucial that I have that extra stop. IMO you wont see a huge change in image quality from the xti to the t3i and not a ton more on top of that with the 7d. I would put money into glass because that is going to have the biggest effect on image quality. The benefits of the 7d over the xti is going to be autofocus, frame rate, video, and better iso sensitivity.

EDIT: I always put money into glass over bodies. I did not upgrade my body for 3 years until I had built up my lens lineup to where I felt like I could pretty much do anything I wanted. Then I bought a upgraded body, and am now pretty much set. I also bought a body that was more than I needed at the time (5d2) but I had it for 2.5 years and have never felt like it is limiting me (except in sports). If i was you I would skip the t3i all together and get a 7d/60d/or whatever else comes out in the near future if you want to upgrade bodies.

edit2: i hope some of that made sense, im half asleep

I am thinking about buying a nikon prime lens to shoot in low light and get better star trail shots.

This is what i am considering.

Anyone has any other sugestions/lenses i should look at?
Thanks in advance.

since it's a nikon we need to know what camera you have? Does it have an internal AF motor?

i wouldn't shoot star trails with anything tighter than a 28mm. 50 is a bit too tight imo. people do shoot trails with 50's though.

there's only a few instances where i'd want to shoot a star trail with a tighter crop.

also, something to take note. the tighter the crop, the more apparent movement of the stars. at 50mm, you can get a decent looking star trail in 1/4th the time it takes to get one at 12mm.

You don't have an internal focus motor. If you want a lens to autofocus on your camera it has to be a Nikon AF-S lens or an aftermarket lens with an internal focusing motor.

Seems like the 24-105 F/4L IS is the go to lens for most DSLR filmers.

was looking for 500-600 used or new. Because what i was thinking is if a lense is going to cost me 1000$ i might aswell just buy a cam corder for cheap even if i loose some of the great features of a dlsr.

Honestly the only general zooms in your price range are the 18-135 and 28-135. I'm not particularly familiar with either of these put if I were you I'd save up and pick up a used 24-105, it's a really nice piece of glass.
