5:1 it'll end up being a full-fledged home server project. That's how it'd turn out for me anyway

I don't think a home server or NAS type thing is what I'm looking for, I'm sure it would work, but that's not near hands on and dirty enough for me.

I just have an ancient AMD machine plugged in to our TV as well as the 1gbps router, remote connect to it from my PC whenever I want to store new movies/tv shows/whatever else on it.

Not the best setup, but its the only way I knew how to do it.

Build a mini-ITX rig to run XBMC on, then convert your current setup to NAS to support it.

I'd get an air cooler and a Corsair PSU if I were you, also Velocirapter = useless now compared to an SSD.

Started this rig with:

CM690
550w Corsair
Gigabyte P35 mobo
C2D e8400
8800gt
2gb RAM
250gb drive
cheap dvd burner

Bought a GTX275, 640 and 750 gb drives, a 60gb SSD, and grabbed a 160gb to install over the years, then I got the following for free:

Asus P6X58D-E mobo
i7-920
6gb G.Skill DDR3
750w Corsair

So now that's what I'm rockin'.

that's where im kinda stuck, heres whats going down...

My current build is an intel wolfdale rig that was pretty decent in 2008 but recently I started to play games on that steam jaunt and ****ing can't. My ram sucks dick, my psu is underpowered ****s gay. I can play games like fallout and thats about it. I bought mirrors edge on sale and I'm stuck on a level because it freezes too bad to play through it.

So, I want a new pc that I can game on but here's my other problem. Thus far I have 2tb's full of videos and its going to keep growing. Also my current rig is nice enough to still be useful so for the time being I was going to turn it into a server, I've got another tb hdd that the os is on and i've got a 650 for documents and such.

My idea was, build this new comp for gaming and ****, drop my 3rd monitor and use that as a main display for my old rig/new server. Throw another tb in it & some dat ubuntu, and leave it in the basement. Take the 650 out and use that as a document drive on my new rig and use the raptor for my os and ****.

I was looking for an sdd, and they're around the same price and everything but I don't know a whole lot about them. What would you recommend in terms of an ssd in size and speed.

Like always love pete

Pete, ditch the Velociraptor. It's just not worth it compared to an SSD. You can probably grab a 256GB SSD on sale for that price, or a 128GB and a 500GB WD Blue or something. Best bang for buck with good reliability is probably the Crucial M4 at the moment. Agility 3s are going very cheap, but are somewhat less reliable. It was worth it to me to chance it and save $50 each on my 128GB drives, but it might not be to you.

If you've got the cash now Yobo, picking up a new SB setup isn't a bad call at all. IB isn't far away, but doesn't seem like it'll have many significant benefits. The one thing I would consider waiting for is the Z77 chipset, it brings some major improvements.

That sounds like a mighty fine idea.

But an SSD will outperform that HDD for sure. Here's what I'd do.

- Load the current rig up with storage and turn it into a server
- Get a 256gb SSD, preferably from Crucial. Should be around the same price of that HDD, should hold your programs/games just fine
- Get a Corsair PSU for around the same price for much better quality
- Get an air cooler. Those prepackaged liquid cooling setups aren't much better for extreme OCing than a good air cooler, and a good air cooler is much, much cheaper

Thats one thing I hate about having a laptop. I can't download copious amounts of bluray rips and keep them without filling up my hdd space compared to tb's of space on my old desktop.

lol the tb i have my os on is a wd black, BIG DICK PLAYER JUST ENTERED THE ORGY EVERYONE CAN GO HOME NOW

Nohomo i'll check em out, the only reason I picked the velo was because i didn't know what ssd to choose. Also I remembered reading some where that they degrade faster or something but seeing how the average build only lasts about 4-5 years in terms of performance so I don't think it really matters if that is even true or not because chances are i'll want a new build before it goes "bad".

that was another question I had, I just assumed that I needed liquid cooling for that type of performance but i'd much rather just use some heavy duty heatsink; (its what I have now) and im all about low maintenance.

Thanks for the advice borzilla's, unfortunately I won't be able to afford any of this until what I project to be august-ish. Right now i'm saving cash like a mad man for this ****er...
