Lost this little girl yesterday. She was producing eggs at an alarming rate (9 in three weeks) and the vet thought that it would be a good idea to shock her system by removing all the eggs, everything that she had ever known from her cage, and then give her medicine to stop producing the eggs because it wasn't healthy.
Less than 24 hours later she was gone.

Sorry to hear that pballin. I lost my budgie at the beginning of January. I was in Louisiana and the parents were pet sitting. Bad idea. I ended up getting a mural of him on my shoulder two weeks ago. It's where he belongs.

Sorry to hear that. I too own several birds; but I do not know if it was a wise choice to remove everything from the cage. That seems like it would put more stress on the poor thing. I understand that it was not healthy for her to be laying that many eggs; birds are not the easiest animals to take care of.
Anyway, not trying to ramble on. Sorry again for your loss.

my wife is a vet and she works with birds quite a bit. i just asked her about this and she said her best guess was they were trying to shock the bird to stop producing eggs. she said they get calcium deficiencies and that combined with the stress is probably why she passed. she said she wouldnt have removed everything and would have left an egg in there hoping she would stop producing them, but she also said it is really hard for her to not know the whole situation or give any input on something she cant see.
thought i'd ask her FWIW. sorry for your loss always sucks losing part of the family
