So my German shepherd is my new mtb buddy as of yesterday. Went on my first trail ride of the season and took her with me and she loved it and stuck with me the entire time. It was pretty awesome to say the least.

So I am building a bike (want sram but seems like its not as common on an off the self bike). I am looking at a 29er Hardtail with x9 components? Any advice?

I'm pretty biased towards Fisher 29ers. I own a 2011 Cobia and love it. Only thing I did to it was replace the grips and replace the tires with one size thinner tires.
Best thing to do is go to your LBS and try some out/talk to people that have them.

I worked at a Trek/Fisher shop for about a year and a half. I liked some of their bikes (my buddy has a Cobia and I have owned an XCal), but for what they cost it seems like building is a better route. I mean the only thing that is "trek/fisher" is the frame. The rest is pieced together from bontragger crap and mediocre components.

Why not just go buy a Spec. Stumpjumper comp? x7/x9 build.

It's one of the candidates right now. There aren't any spec dealers near me so that does make it a little harder to take one out for a spin.

Trek makes Bontrager.
Picked up a set of XT Trail pedals (m785), Specy 2.3 ground control rear.
these pedals blow my old cb candys out of the water.

new shock next (float r or ario r)

I saw a few of those on mtbr that cracked, I believe on the swingarm(not 100% sure, and I think it was the newer models (2012).
Search up 'trek superfly crack' before you start looking at them.

Squids... Squids everywhere at the trail today.
Had a pretty hefty guy with a brand new carbon fiber single speed who thought he was going to tear it up. Found him about a minuets ride into the trail sitting on the side of the trail lol.

Got a new (used) bike. Gary Fisher Sugar 292. It's an 04, but it weighs maybe 28 pounds and climbs like a goat. Only $425
edit--don't worry, switched out the crap seat and peddles already. Also have some better tires to put on once I get around to it.

I'm looking to get into mountain biking, have a budget of <$700. Looking at a Scott Aspect Tour, Trek 3900, Airborne Marauder, Airborne Zeppelin... any suggestions from you guys?

Go to your local bike shop and try a bunch out to find what you like best. Of course I've got to say to add a 29er in to your consideration.
