I think the joke was that he was "mudslinging"...political term. I don't think it's supposed to be poop, or santorum.

Most people don't know very much about paintball, so you have to watch the ad with that in mind.

They're going to see Mitt Romney (or his lookalike, if they're paying attention) with a realistic looking assault rifle... After the first couple of seconds, they might realize that it's one of those paint gun things, and that he's shooting at cutouts of Santorum, but missing.

They're not going to think about the color of the paint... that he's not wearing a mask... the majority isn't going to think about paintball at all.

People who are gun proponents (primarily republicans) will recognize that this is not a gun at all. They will look at this as a non-violent attack on santorum... romney is slinging mud (I'm guessing it's "mud" they're trying to portray, and not crap).

The democratic or anti-gun audience will see santorum under attack from a gun toting Romney. They won't care that this is a paintball gun. It looks like a gun, so it's a gun. Guns = bad, therefore Romney = bad.

Anyway... it's stupid, but it will be effective in the way they want it to be.
