No barrel kit? Improvise!

You may have heard of the "tape detent" or "nail polish detent" people have been using in lieu of small bore barrels. Here is a short tutorial on how to do both.

  • Fingernail Polish Method

Shake your nail polish (or your mom's) up very well to get it mixed. This is why it's a good idea to simply man up and buy a fresh bottle.

Use the brush to apply three dots of polish evenly spaced around the bore of the barrel. Paint them no deeper than 1/4 inch for Snipers and Cockers, as seen here.

Be careful not to let it run!

Each dot should look like this:

  • The Tape Method

Start by cutting a piece of tape (electrical tape works very well) roughly this size:

Slip it into the barrel as shown. Notice it's only about 1/4 inch deep.

Fold it over like so, and make sure it is smoothly adhered to the inner and outer walls.

Last, create an identical piece on the opposite side. Failing to do so can cause paintballs to spin erratically.

I tried the using scotch tape around the entire lip. It worked great on my pump but then I switched to my semi Proto later that day. Put the same barrel (slightly smaller bore than my stock WGP barrel) and forgot about the tape. Damn balls getting jammed for a game until I realized that the tape was still there. I basically had to scrape it out with a knife while hiding behind a bunker.

Scotch tape can break easily. Electrical is kind of elastic, which is nice. Stick with Electrical tape.

I know this is an older thread, but how well would this work with an sl682??? Also, is there a specific tape type to use??? It looked as if you used Electric tape in the Pictures, would masking tape work, or is it too flimsy???

Whatever tape you have that is smooth on one side and sticky on the other.

Taping fishing line to your barrel much like the tape mod.

Good info here, and while I like to use nail polish I prefer to paint stripes rather than make dots. It takes several coats to build them up high enough but it seems to be gentler on the paint.

Using tape may be difficult to do with an SL682 because of the way that gun's bolt has an O-ring that makes a seal with the back rim of the barrel.

I put nail polish detents into several SL68II, making sure to start the stripes a bit further back so as to prevent the O-ring from getting stuck.

I think I'll have to go with the paint stripe on my SL68. I was going to send the barrel out to be freak bored, but I was told it was a "rare" sniper barrel. I think it's 14-16" long instead of the shorter stock barrel.

Castro, thanks for chiming in about the fishing line. Makes sense - I just wasn't sure.

I use tape through the squeegee hole of my SL2, its a little tricky to get all the way to the barrel, but it works for mine.

I use clear tape on mine. I have a .678 barrel. When I use the electrical tape and accidentally double feed I can't shoot and when it does it breaks paint... When I use the clear tape I could double feed and it goes through without breaking paint.
