Running a credit card every time you buy two cases of paint takes a considerably longer amount of time than just showing an ID and initialing a list.

Having field layouts doesn't make a difference IMHO and its overrated. When we play we never practice, just show up and play, and we always make finals and usually make podium. This includes us walking the field for only about 10-15 minutes before the event starts.

The GPL/MAPL is prob in line with the biggest tournament series similar to it ie NEPL and CFOA minus having an xball component. If you take a look at the teams we are drawing they sit somewhere in-between beginner and novice with the obvious outliers such as yourselves, evolution, minions, and I'm sure theres a few others-- those teams, outliers withstanding, don't really gain much from a PSP affiliation. I am as pro PSP as you can be but in our case I think the MAPL should remain a race to 2 league. So start barking at people to start the separate OPEN CLASS MAXL so we can smash each other all day.

John,
I knew what was going on with you guys, just figured there was no need to go into depth. Props to competing in so many tournaments.
In regards to PSP Affiliation, I do not know the exact details of how it works, but what is there to lose from having the GPL on the PSP site as an affiliate league? What is there to gain other than recognition? I was under the assumption that rankings from an affiliate local league seed you higher for the national tournaments than rankings from a non-affiliate, but APPA ran tournament series. Correct me if I am wrong.
In regards to the MAXL idea, it has been one that has been given consideration for a couple seasons now, and it has never seemed to work out. I know for a fact that my team would be down for an D1 and below Race to series if it was in affiliation with the GPL/PSP. I recently guested for one of our D4 teams at NEXL, and what a blast. They had scoreboards in the pits, Hurricanes reffed it, and paint was affordable. On top of that, the series prize is free entry to World Cup.

There is of course the fee to be an affiliate league.....Which could be considered marketing, or you can spend it on a more traditional marketing plan. And with the success of the USPA I think MAXL may have a chance.

I can see both sides of the arguement, I think it just depends on the team I guess. We are like you. 4 out of the 5 events we made it to the finals, and was on the podium twice, after never practicing the layout. That one event we didn't make it to the finals, we came the week before the event and practiced on the layout.

I would be interested in seeing some type of MAXL format. Definitely suggest either making an Open or D1 and under league to maximize the amount of teams.

Agreed, we were playing the USPA tourny finals and were shooting the Valken paint. 1st batch we brought back because it was harder than a rock and the second batch of the higher grade Valken was either breaking in our barrels or not breaking at all. Cost us some much needed points. Either way we had a great time. Draxxus all the way!
In regards to the combination event w/ USPA Finals. Excellent! This combination should be looked into for more expansion options. I'll leave it at that and let the organizers do their job.

The field layout is difficult. For teams local to the field and teams who have the availability to play the weekend before, it is nice. However, there are plenty of teams who cant make that weekend before the event im sure and other non-local teams that cant just set up there own field the way the event is.
Im just getting back into the sport after 2.5 years not playing any local events. I remember when you never knew the field till you got there. Everyone saw it for the first time in the morning.

Field layout means nothing to us. We never practice to begin with so knowing the layout beforehand has no bearing on us. We still perform at a high level without ever looking at the field layout until we arrive at the tournament.

I personally feel that this is the way tournament paintball needs to shift, back to the local events, in order for the sport to sustain into the future. It would be great if the GPL became a trailblazer in this aspect.[*]Revamp the D3 division to a race to 4 format, following D3 PSP rules in regards to player classification limits.[*]Reach out to local fields in regards to getting their home teams to play. This will probably entail releasing the layout publicly and helping to organize scrimmages on a travelling basis. You simply cannot expect to pull teams from afar to your field two weekends in a row. It is not 2007 anymore, where teams and players are willing to travel 3+ hours each way for practice. If you want teams to play at OXCC for practice, offer an incentive of some sort in regards to the practice or the event (discounted paint, free hamburgers, etc.)[*]Offer cash prizes for more than just 1st place. Tier your prize list to make financial sense for both the league and the teams playing it.

I like these ideas, specially making GPL race to 4.
