why not just do it over skype? a lot of duo's produce separately

btw, mattboy, listen to my song more carefully. my synths change up a **** ton, slightly, but i do make them change, it would sound much different if they were all the same.

That is what we have been doing but it is not that same as being there.
Its easier to show your ideas then explain them

I've been so busy this last month with school. But here's something I've been working on whenever I've had a chance. Let me know how everything sounds!:

here's a tip. if you already know what you need to change and do, do that before you put it up on soundcloud, because honestly, i was about to listen to it, until i noticed your notes where you mentioned things that need to be fixed. so now id rather wait till you do those and listen after, then listen now. so fix those things, reupload, repost, then ill give you my 2 cents.

I want to know how my EQing, levels and mix down is. The chords in the progression are just filler right now. This isn't something that need to be 'fixed'; it's just a note there so I don't have people saying "make your chords move more".

Let me know what needs to be fixed with everything else, regarding the kick, clap, hat, loop, chord synth, lead etc. I produce on terrible speakers remember?

nah i wasn't aware of what you use to produce. im not listening on my headphones so i can't comment much, just keep producing and comparing your songs to established producers and after a couple of years you will be signing tunes left and right.

I listened to your newest track:
You're def getting the hang of EQing. Noticeable improvement in the presence/punch of kicks and claps and the overall structure of the track is the best I've seen you do thus far. The levels of everything is pretty decent; fairly good balance all around, but it could be better.

I'd work on 'sculpting' your sounds and synths and bit better (kinda hard to do without monitors). By this I mean try and get rid of all unnecessary frequencies to get rid of any tiny resonances or unwanted sounds; this will make your synths sound way 'cleaner'. Also, give your melody a bit more variation, or throw in some fills/variations after a number of bars.

I think you just need to start putting in more time. Instead of a new track every week, devote a day or two to just making the best synth you can, or making the kick as fat and punchy and nice sounding as possible, etc.

"You can't tell yourself 'I'm going to build a great wall' and then just do it...You need to say, 'Im going to lay this brick as perfectly as a brick can be laid'. And then, over time, you will eventually have a great wall." - Will ****ing Smith aka The Fresh Prince.
Thank you very much! I actually dont like "Tough ****" as much as i like "The Solace Within" I feel like i did a much better job on it than the others. And i actually have been doing that for the past 3 days. I have this really cool (well really cool to me lol) new synth that i almost have done right now. Really bright, warm, figured out how to make the echo go into an arpeggio and not the actual note itself, and it sounds pretty cool doing 3 note rises. But thank you very much for the compliments and ideas. Means alot!

How are you guys organizing your music? I have everything divided into subfolders by genre but it's just getting a little bit clunky. For house I have soulful/general house, tech, progressive, and electro which works pretty well, but for dubstep I can't really find a good way to divide it up. It's currently in folders by high, medium, and low energy but that gets really confusing. Thoughts?

Yeah, my decks divide them into artists, album, title, genre, year, bpm, file name, and folder, but I've yet to really get into organizing my tunes much further than that.

as far as my synths and variation go, im keeping it as so, its dance music, its supposed to be somewhat repatative and easy to follow, not a whole mess of layers and sounds making it sound like jumbly noise. im more about minimal big beats and bass and a few swooshes to help move the track around and you're good. i guarantee if you heard it on a system you wouldn't think it needed anything lol

but thanks
I think we have to make efforts to move outside of our comfort zone, but easier said than done.

Also if you are sharing your music probably 90% of people are going to be listening on labtops or sub par systems. Its definitely important that songs sound interesting without sub systems.

Hm, wonder how willing DJs I hit up would be to let me use your setups for a price, or even throw them money to show me how to use the CDJs and ish. I know my brothers tight with a couple guys that are legit house DJs in NJ.

thats true, but i would rather make songs that sound weird on laptops/****ty speakers but would sounds beast as **** live, i mean i could "sell out" and start making generic stuff that would sound ok on regular speakers, but like i said said, id rather keep making stuff i know would sound insane live in the moment then go the easy route.

i know i personally wouldn't let anyone use my stuff without me being there + knowing whoever is using it can afford to get a replacement if necessary, like say a drink is spilled or something. i wouldn't want anyone to owe me anything, i would want either the money or a replacement within like 24-72 hours.

Ha..if you think I'd bring a drink anywhere near that **** you're crazy. Had one of my own friends come up, trip and spill a full beer on my mixtrack pro at a party two nights ago. Not going to bother with house parties till my friend builds me some sort of enclosure.

On the bright side my boy was selling a mixtrack pro for a hundred dollars, so my friend who spilled bought it for me.

Plus I would expect the person to be around, doubt anyones just gonna have me walk into their home alone to use their $1000+ in gear.

Pretty run of the mill Dj headphone. Comparable to the sony mdrv700, ultrasone dj1 , technics rpdj1000 etc etc. Not a bad purchase in the least.

I was just wondering though, how are the lows? Right now i have the beats studio and pro. But my pro's just broke, and i only use the studio beats for production since i dont have monitors, and i know the lows on the beats are fantastic and full.
