Wondering what are some good lenses for sports in a cheaper price range? Ill probably be picking up a 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G VR lense this week. but what are some other good lenses for my d5100 that would be good or better on the cheaper side?

You posted that yesterday..people will help you when they can and if they want to, but I can see why they might have skipped over it, it's a P&S camera, just go out there and take photos, some of us don't do much to protect our expensive lenses and DSLR's because paint wipes off and it's no big deal, with a camera like that the chances of getting hit are pretty small.

I picked up a Canon Rebel XS 1000d for under 300 local and that is enough camera to do just about what ever you want, and at that price it would leave you enough cash to get a new lens with a little more zoom and whatnot

dont stress about it, your hand is going to cover most of the camera anyways. If you are all that worried about it, just wrap it in a towel or something like that.

ok, how often are you even going to shoot on the field?
the chances of people hitting a P&S are not very high anyways unless people aim for you.
if you're that afraid of getting hit on your camera, just shoot behind the net :/
i wouldn't use any polycarbonate case or anything since a P&S might have trouble focusing if its dirty

Ok so I'm looking at putting my 580II to more use so I've been looking at getting myself a stand, hotshoe and shoot through umbrella kit. I've been reading Strobist a fair bit lately and they recommend a 40-42" Umbrella, but the majority of the kits I've seen have 32-33" ones.

Is there a "right" size umbrella I should be looking to get first off ?

Also what should I be looking at in the way of a trigger to use with my 580II along with either of my 5DC or 1D2N bodies. ?

depends on how much spill you want and how much you want it diffused. I really don't like umbrellas that much unless you are wanting to brighten up most of the scene you are shooting. It's much less concentrated light. But for a speedlight they work well.

I have a 33" one and I'd say go bigger. At least 40" especially if you get one with a black back. It will give you a bit more softer light.

For the triggers I've heard that yungnuo are pretty good. I do know that it's a crap shoot. The first ebay triggers I got were pretty crappy so I just decided to get cybersyncs but with being in Aus I'm not sure how all that works out.

People also like the Cactus v5's and the rf-602. Nothing wrong with getting them and testing it all out. That's how I got into off-camera flash.

no, you can't shoot through it but you just turn it around to contain the spill and get it more directional. If you want the spill take the black back off and shoot through, more directional shoot into the umbrella and black back will bounce it back.

You'd need a CST transmitter and a CSRB receiver...and man the prices on those are much more than in the US. I think they are around $70 USD here.

i have the strobist kit and the stuff it came with is plenty good quality. I replaced the umbrella mount to a beefier one, but that was more for personal preference and because i got it free, otherwise I would have just used the old one.

I think you'll find you want something other than umbrellas fairly quickly. I would for sure go with 40" or bigger. Depending on your price range, a wescott apollo ($150 USD) would give you much better control over your light, and is easy to tear down and assemble.

Looking into upgrading from a point and shoot, did a lot of research and it seems to me the Rebel T3 is the best camera for the price range im looking at (Sub $500) Any thoughts or objections? Thanks
