Army ROTC to HPSP

Worth it? Currently under ROTC scholarship, Health Science major with a premed track. I have essentially 3 options. 1. Serve my active duty than go to med school 2. Go to med school on an ed delay out of pocket, serve my time afterwards (do residency too) 3. Use the HPSP scholarship. My only hesitancy toward the HPSP scholarship is the amount of time owed active, but that might not be an issue depending on how much I enjoy what I'm doing. Does anyone have any information on the medical corps or what it's like being a doctor for the army on AD (I'd like to specialize in EM)

Thank guys

I'm looking for help here; if I can't talk to a group of friends on a forum like this then who can I talk to? In the military thread entirely, you shouldn't be facepalming anyone... it's for support

Option 3 makes the most sense. Regardless of the amount of time you have to do contract wise, it will be worth it in the long run.

Quote:
Your active duty service obligation to the U.S. Army is one year of service for every year you receive the scholarship. Your minimum obligation depends on your health care field. For example, the minimum obligation for medical students is two years. Dental, psychology, optometry and veterinary students are obligated to serve no fewer than three years. There is an additional obligation for residency and fellowship training.
Sounds pretty fair to me, better than any deal I ever got.

Oh and if you are only doing this for a free/ cheap ride through med school I don't want you near the army. We have enough fags who don't give a **** about us just riding out their time owed before leaving for the civilian sector.

ironically enough this Army doc im reffering to is exactly that..when he joined up.since then he's been in 30+ years and deployed 2-3 times or so and bleeds army green. Cant judge everyone by that fact. I was kind of the same. I joined because of family history, sense of duty, and I wanted the GI Bill and training in a good job. I know the people you talk of but sometimes those people turn out to be some of the best.

Army ROTC to HPSP

Is it possible to do the HPSP after becoming an officer? Some say no, some say yes. A lot of times, the reason behind no is that ROTC usually places you were they want you...

Do what you gotta do to get the Army to pay for med school.

My aunt recently told me, after talking about my service, that she wished she had gone into the Army so that they would've paid for her schooling.

She is the Chief of Medicine at St. Joseph's Hospital (in Atlanta, GA). Sort of a big deal, but take it with a grain of salt.

Personally, I wish I did the Army Nursing thing and then had them pay for my PA or NP, but that's just me.
