NPPL All Star Game
I missed the event this year so how was this year's different from last year's?
And what was that about the centerflag not being live until after 1:00? What was the thinking there? And there were 3 flags n the field?

The format was interesting. Sideline coaching gave the crowd something to get involved in. The center flag idea gives a bit of a focal point to concentrate on, and the end flags were just how they are now. Pulling the center flag gave you 20pts.
Oh yeah... WEST COAST!

How much of a focal point is it if teams forgot about it until the game was over?

Give it a little time. We only learned about what the format would be 10min before we started. So yeah, might take awhile to get used to..

i think the x-ball format is better as far as spectating goes. easy to follow, fast paced goal for both teams: win 7 games. thats not to bash on the NPPL in any way, just my thoughts as a player and someone genuinely enjoys watching pros play.

It didn't seem very focal to us...even though we only won 1 game and by the time we realized that we needed to grab it we were already down 3 games to 1. We were told that as soon as we shoot all 7 guys we would get the 20 points for the center flag...didn't happen.
Also instead of running the flag back there are supposed to be buzzers at each teams station. So all you have to do is touch the buzzer on your opponents start box and you win.

This makes more sense then in practice at the event. It seems like it could be a fun format with a few more tweaks.
If you don't mind me asking Nick, what was your take on the format? What would you as a player like to see tweaked?

It did not seem very structured at all. We were told the rules about 15min before the allstar games started. The east team had very little organization when it came to lines and most of us had no pods or paint ready.
In any case the NPPL needs to try this at a local or regional event before just tossing it to the all star game. For us...or I guess for me, the all star game was about having fun and getting to play with guys on other teams I never would play with; I respect and have looked up to coming up in the sport. Now I am a competitor but to take it as seriously as to follow the rules about the new format was stretching it. Tossing 19 guys together with the rules 25 min before you play is crazy. It was about the east and the west, Ollie vs Frank, peers vs peers, and that is about it. We just wanted to win our games...
Now if the NPPL is going to do a best of five, 7-man game, 5 min games, spectator side coaching, and a center flag with buzzers, they need to do it as a mini event with teams in brackets. I would loe to know the turn around for games as well, as in how long do you have before each game to get air, paint, and clean-up.

the 5 minute games is a good idea. ive been saying this for a long time, if you wanna speed up games just lower the time limit.
as far as race to format for 7 man, way too expensive. I heard that is why they got rid of the race to format last year. the whole kee truck was emptied out in no time. our team shot 25 cases in 8 games in dc. best of 5 for a team like us.....ugh. $$$$$$

As always, Mr Slowiak makes some very valid points. As a spectator, I felt like it was just thrown together and whatever happened happened. When players earn the respect and admiration of their fans and are voted to the ALL STAR game, its to play that respective format, not be the guinea pigs of the league to test the waters of a new format.

if this is in fact a league merger test, i would hope they just stick with the xball format. this seems like some random format they made just for the sake of not picking x-ball. honestly, lets face it: faster games, central goal, simple flag hangs(that make for some exciting moments.. J-rab anyone?), and on top of that its easy to watch and follow. my mom can follow an xball game, and she doesnt watch paintball at all. thats saying something.
