Haven't been in here for awhile. My big beardie, who's name is now Spike, has been doing amazing. He looks a lot better, is eating more, roaming around more, and just overall more active.

I picked up a ReptiSun 10.0 48" bulb and a fixture for him. I've been using the Zilla one for my newest guy. I've talked to my local pet store owner about a few of the things you guys were saying. He doesn't even carry Zilla, and he said the light will be fine. Also a friend who owns a reptile company, and breeds reptiles, said it's fine. The company even says so now. They said their old ones did, but these have been redesigned. I don't mean to be ignorant or arrogant, but I have multiple people telling me it's fine, all of which raise beardies themselves.

I also am still using the crushed walnut shell in Spike's cage. He no longer eats in there, so it isn't much of an issue. I've been using my 29 gallon tank, lined with paper towels, to feed both of them crickets. I raised his greens bowl, so he doesn't get any sand in it.

Actually, about a half hour ago, the little guy ate about 8 crickets. He's been eating 3, MAYBE 4 a day. He jumped from my hand, 6 feet up, into his feeder tank, ate a dried grasshopper that was still in there, then devoured every cricket I fed him. All in a span of about 3 minutes. Then Spike ate about 10-14 crickets, almost double his usual. Not quite sure why they were both hungry. My hamster tried biting my thumb too, somethings going nuts with all my animals hahah.

Now for pictures, and the newest guy He still needs a name, so suggestions are GREATLY appreciated. I got him from PetsMart(Maybe Petco, always confuse them), for $44. They were having a 30% off sale.

And Spike!

The yellow around his eyes, ears, and stomach spikes has been getting brighter and brighter. I thought at first it was a problem, since it was only prominent around his eyes, but now I'm thinking it's just his natural colors.

They've been on a pretty good schedule. When I wake up in the morning, I switch them over to their daytime bulbs, UVB bulbs, put some greens in their dishes, and mist them with room temperature water. Then me or my friend feeds them crickets later on in the day. Then they bask for awhile longer, and then the nighttime bulbs go in, UVB off, and repeat the next day. It's been working out very well.

A week from tomorrow, the reptile breeder I mentioned earlier is going to a show, and is going to look for a new baby beardie for me. I told him I only want a red one, no particular breed in particular, just something that's entirely red, like OC Rage's!

Edit again:
I feel like I'm writing a book. I don't get on here much, so I gotta post all my questions at once hahah. What greens should I be feeding the little guy? He hasn't been eating too much of the collard greens or red leaf lettuce(Just the tops, where it's very dark green). He does eat some, but not much at all. He loves his crickets, but nothing else really.

the bad thing about loose substrates besides the fact that they can cause impaction, is that they harbor bacteria because they soak up all the urine and stuff when your beardy goes to the bathroom, plus its uncomfortable for them to walk on. i mean, imagine if you had to walk on a loose substrate all the time? the deserts in australia are really hard packed dirt/clay, they avoid the loose sandy area's. good to see the repti-carpet though, should just keep that if you don't want to use tile.

the fact his colors are coming out more are due to you switching him over to a proper UVB. you can use the zilla one if you want to take the risk of it not being good, but why not give your beardy the best/proper set up when you can rather then just because you dont want to? and you want them to be able to get within 6-8inches of the UVB light otherwise it doesn't really affect them.

them not eating much could be due to their temps being off. have you gotten a probe/temp gun to measure the temp of the basking area? the stick on/round ones can be up to 10-15 degree's off. you want it around 110 for the little one and around 100-105 for spike.

and there aren't different "breeds" of bearded dragons, just different morphs. if you were referring to leatherback/silkbacks then to clear it up leathebacks have reduced scales/spikes on their backs and feel smoother, and silkbacks happen when you breed two leatherbacks together and you get a beardie with no spikes and no scales at all.

edit- night bulbs? what bulbs are you putting in at night? you shouldn't be putting any, especially now that its summer, the tank can get down to 65-70 at night no problem. if you have a red light that's not good, they can see the color red unlike most lizards/gecko's. also, don't mist them, it doesn't do anything for them except raise the humidity in their tank which can cause a respiratory infection. they absorb water through their vent(the thing they pee/poo out of), not their skin.

The carpets in the little guy's tank, and as soon as I get money, we'll probably be switching over to carpet in Spike's tank.

Well that's a problem about it needing to be so close, because it's the exact length of the tank, so there's no way to get it mounted lower inside. But he does climb up his log sometimes, and basks right there. I'll measure tomorrow to see how far it is from the bulb.

Their temps have been absolutely perfect. I got a probe thermometer(you can actually see the probe end mounted in the second to last picture) that I take temps with. The little guy sits in that same spot everyday, and it's always about 100-110*, with the other side of the tank being right around 80*. Spike gets about 95-100 in his favorite basking spot.

And sorry about the use of breed, not too familiar with the lingo haha. I would LOVE a leatherback or silkback, but I'm going to wait to see what he can get first.

Exoterra 75W NightGlo bulbs. They look like blacklight bulbs. Very little light, just help keep the tanks up to temperature. They're located in my basement, so it does get a little chilly sometimes. Tonight I'm going to try no bulbs on at all, and see what the temperatures are like. If it doesn't dip below 65*, then I'll be doing no lights at night anymore.

I kept reading in every book and online article that you need to daily mist them? I'll stop if it doesn't do anything, but how am I supposed to hydrate the baby? He has the little "pool" in his tank, but I've never seen him go in it.

Also, humidity isn't a problem. It's always 25-50%, never any higher. I run a humidifier 24/7 right in between their two tanks, and empty it daily, so it never stops. I keep a very close eye on the humidity levels whenever I mist them, and it never affects it too bad.

Yeah, ill be getting a female hypo leatherback eventually, crazy nice looking dragons.

if you want to use some sort of heat element for their tanks at night either use a ceramic heater or an under tank heater but mounted on the side of the glass and not under it.

you hydrate the little one the same, you give it baths once a week or so at least. and yeah misting doesn't do anything except make your tank dirty. and its rare for dragons to go in their water bowls on their own. some do, but most don't, and chances are you might never even see them drink unless you watch them real close while you bathe them.

andddd they don't need any humidity really, so unless you have that humidifier there for some crested geckos/chameleon's or something else then you can just turn it off.

http://www.beautifuldragons.com/home.html

thats the best site imo on info. it says its ok to mist every once in a while to help keep skin moist for shedding but you can just give them a bathe every day or every other day while in heavy shed and they will love it much more.

Landed a job at the local nature center handling/feeding/cleaning cages for all the snakes and other reptiles. The list includes 3 timber rats, 2 copper heads, many foreign snakes, a few hawks, and a pretty chill barred owl.

I have a tame Chinese Water Dragon for sale (Can be held)

They are very similar to an iguana, but eat crickets and meal worms instead of fruits and vegetables, and are more low maintenance.

It is about 1yr old maybe a little younger and about 1ft from nose to tail. Will get about 3ft from nose to tail at full grown.

Selling the dragon only, and it will need about a 10gal aquarium for housing. I have a 5gal that will be alright for a temporary home I can throw in for an extra $10.

They eat about 5-7 crickets a day, I usually buy about 30 crickets a week and put in the cage, they wont over eat!
Ad from craigslist. A 10 gallon tank for a foot long chinese water dragon. Needless to say, he got a nice email. He's selling for $25 but after telling him how big of a ******* he is, I'm going to try and get it for cheaper and get him a much better enclosure.

Sorry for the triple post, but another great day in the reptile world. Picked up a 4 foot x 2 foot x 6 foot (length x depth x height) screen terrarium that was custom built for $50. Came with a large tree stump that goes about 5 feet up it. Had 8!!! overhead lamps with it that were clicked along the tops and sides. Mix of UVB/nighttime/viewing lighting. Has a bottom door to work on the floor and a top door to get every place else. Came with a lot of other stuff. She also threw in an aquarium stand for a 55 gallon tank that was custom build with custom handles. The price for everything is around ~$450.

I'll get pics of all of it sometime this week. I work 10-10 tomorrow between the 2 jobs so probably not any time then.

What exactly are you keeping those monitors in... Looks like some aquariums, which is probably one of the worst things to keep a monitor in, if not the worst.

Just going to throw this out there, since you didn't reply. I would highly advise fixing your husbandry with the monitors above. Get them into solid enclosures, with proper temps humidity. The black throat looks SAD, awful substrate, too small enclosure, low humidity and malnourished. The croc looks malnourished and dehydrated as well, and I'll be surprised if he lives very long. The bosc looks overweight, and I'm sure he probably isn't getting the right diet (all insects).

Lose the tanks, fix your husbandry, or please for the sake of the varanids stick to leopard geckos.

lol. here comes the bashing. the black throat and croc where wild caught rescues. they where housed in those tanks while I was building them their proper enclosures. The savvy isn't overweight. he's just aggressive so he was puffing up. Now the geckos weren't really my thing, i was given a lot of them from friends. they all where rehomed. and the croc and black throat where sold to some local breeders who where gonna put them in breeding projects. I only have my ball pythons and the savvy now. between school and paint balling time and money is tight.

oh and the black throat in the pic was eating a fuzzy rat in the pic. that's why his head looks weird.

the reason for my posting was to share some of my old herps. of course i should've explained more before the bashing. but of course I forgot we are on a forum.

Wild caught rescues? You mean, bought from an importer? As for your sav puffing up, you do realize you can provide a basin large enough to soak in a proper enclosure, and never have to touch him- which is ultimately stressful for the animal.

I also highly doubt the blackthroat or croc went into breeding programs. Any breeder worth his salt wouldn't have purchased either animal, and would have started with CBB stock.

I'm the kind of guy that picks up the messed up looking herps off of craigslist that no body wants and brings them back to health. That croc wouldn't even try to bite when i got him. A week in my care and he was back in shape. As for your soaking concerns. Every time i clean my monitors i throw them in the tub so they can soak while they wait for me to finish cleaning their cage.

And trust me. If you had seen those lizards before they left my care, you would have never taught they had ever been in bad shape. I've been collecting, caring and breeding herps for a while. I'm not just one of those people that grabs herps without knowing what to do. im not gonna argue with you back and forth on my methods of keeping herps.
