lens advice

Hey nation, Im just looking for some advice in a new lens to get.

Im looking for a general "all purpose" kind of lens. I currently have a 50mm f/1.8 and im limited to some shots.

I've been looking into the tamron 70-300mm and canon 75-300mm.

I only have a limited amount of money to spend and Im getting this lens because of an upcoming vacation.

Thanks!

EF 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM is a good walkaround lens. It won't get you super long shots like an xx-300 will, but for the money you'll get a better made lens with better image quality than a superzoom. You'll have USM autofocus with full time manual override, and the IS helps with handholding considering it maxes out at f/5.6 at 135mm. It was my first lens and a serious workhorse for me until I got my 24-70 and went all L.

Hey buddy i just got a t1i about a month back that came with the 50mm 1.8 lens and my first lens was the 75-300 but after taking my kids to the local museum, neither of those lens worked for vacation type pics, and because of an up coming trip to disney world i ordered a Sigma 18-125mm lens and this proved to be exactly what i needed the wide angle of the 18mm helps get nice portraits and the zoom to 125mm helps get those distance shots.

now the 125 wont get you a pic of your kids on the roller coaster close up, but you should be able to take a good pic and crop it..

these are the 3 i have in a side by side compairison

canon 50, canon 75-300 and sigma 18-125

Looks like to steal. Not sure about that lens and the IQ but 18-270mm would be a great walk around lens.

most of the non-L long lenses have glaring faults with them if you are wanting crisp photos. If you just want documentation they are ok. They are actually pretty good at f8+ but it's hardly practical to be shooting that slow.

What you want as an all around lens at a reasonable price is the 28-135 IS already mentioned. I've owned it and it was a pretty good walkaround. I've gotten into more wide shots so I like the 17-40L as a walkaround but some people would want more reach.

If you have $500ish the 70-200 f4L would be best if you find yourself wanting much more reach than the 50 (seems like you do) you already have and the optics on it are TOP notch. Is it worth $250 more than a similar 70-300 or 75-300...chyea.

i have been looking at this lens but i watched a video review and read a review that there are issues with that lens...

ill look for the review, shows that at the 18-24mm range you get distortion and at the 200 to 270 range you get less than amazing pictures. the guy recommends that you just get a canon 18-200 because the difference from 200 and 270 isn't that much.

After doing a bit more search, I also found the same info. I knew it was too good. I'll stick with my 55-250mm and 18-135mm and spend the money on 10-22mm instead of selling the 55-250 and 18-135 and get the 18-270 as an all around lens.

Not to mention that at f/8 you've either hit or exceeded the diffraction threshold for most of the newer high resolution crop sensors.

I'll have to try and dig up some of my old shots with the 28-135, they weren't bad but I was blown away when I got my 24-70L, but we're talking about a lens with around three times the used market value. I don't recall what they're going for now, but I've seen a lot of people that have used the 24-105L as a starter L lens, and it's pretty decent too.

Funny you mention wide shots and the 17-40, my most common walkaround lens now is a Tokina 16-28, which I positively love to death. If I could only take two lenses out with me for general use, it would be that and my 70-200 2.8L.

This. 70-200L's are a great GP lens if you don't need width, and the f/4's aren't badly priced.

Get a 55-250IS, that was my first telephoto zoom and it's a perfect feeder lens for eventually moving up to L glass. Sure it's no 300mm but the image stabilization and better glass more than compensate.

I buy most of my photo stuff through B&H or used from photography-on-the.net

I had that lens before all my gear was stolen in Africa Thank God for travel insurance.

Anyway I wasn't a fan of that Tamron 18-270 lens on my D70. I had to send it back a few times because it wouldn't focus properly out of the box.

I also felt that it was a little soft once I got a working version.

Where are you going?
